Hi,

I am doing a research for a university project about creating online communication platform for hard-of-hearings and I will appreciate it if you could answer a questionnaire.

Central Saint Martins School of Arts & Design
Student: Renata Westenberger – renata.westenberger@gmail.com
Research on the use of Internet communication platforms by hard-of-hearings

1. Do you use Internet tools for communication? (Facebook, twitter, blogs, forums, zines, chat rooms, newsletters).

2. If yes, how often? If no, why not?

3. What does hard-of-hearings expect from Internet websites?

4. Are these needs fulfilled by the websites currently online?

5. If yes, which ones?

6. Do you think that hard-of-hearing would benefit from online support by health professionals?

7. Which are the secondary effects of deafness? Which are the common obstacles you face in your daily life? (Facing prejudice, feeling pain, etc.)

Many Thanks

Renata Westenberger

Daily

Same thing as hearing people?

Yes.

You are asking about communication? Alldeaf and Facebook are both great.

6. Do you think that hard-of-hearing would benefit from online support by health professionals?
No, too many mistakes can be made. I will stick with seeing a doctor.

7. Which are the secondary effects of deafness? Which are the common obstacles you face in your daily life? (Facing prejudice, feeling pain, etc.
That's pretty easily found just by reading a few threads here.

6. Do you think that hard-of-hearing would benefit from online support by health professionals?
No, but I do wish my doctors would allow me to use my netbook open to word or wordpad to communicate with.

7. Which are the secondary effects of deafness? Which are the common obstacles you face in your daily life? (Facing prejudice, feeling pain, etc.)
Lack of communication, missing out on a lot due to not hearing.

Printed articles and captioned videos.

No, most videos on the internet are not captioned. The exception: videos posted by HOH/Deaf individuals and groups.

5. If yes, which ones?

HOH/Deaf websites.

6. Do you think that hard-of-hearing would benefit from online support by health professionals?

Yes, many HOH people have syndromes which cause deafness.

7. Which are the secondary effects of deafness? Which are the common obstacles you face in your daily life? (Facing prejudice, feeling pain, etc.)

Isolation. ASL and ASL socials cure that.

1. Do you use Internet tools for communication? (Facebook, twitter, blogs, forums, zines, chat rooms, newsletters).
Yes!!!!

2. If yes, how often? If no, why not?

Daily....like, 24/7 of my life except the time I'm sleeping, going to bathroom, or eating.

3. What does hard-of-hearings expect from Internet websites?

I want closed captions on most videos and movies online.
Live chats with people on professional websites, especially when asking questions or need troubleshooting (ie-Bank of America, retail stores such as Crocs, etc)
Any tasks that avoids the use of the phone and get service/response quickly. Email can be too slow as people don't always check email to respond back right away, hence the live chats and online ordering of food or anything

4. Are these needs fulfilled by the websites currently online?

mostly. Captions still needs work

5. If yes, which ones?

Live chats and online ordering

6. Do you think that hard-of-hearing would benefit from online support by health professionals?
That depends.

7. Which are the secondary effects of deafness? Which are the common obstacles you face in your daily life? (Facing prejudice, feeling pain, etc.)
Can have hard time communicating with others and dealing with not being able to fully understand what the other person is saying.

Well, I see small "d". So I guess you mean medical model?

I have it on good authority that you are not deaf unless you can pick the day when your hearing completely blinked out!

So I guess we are all hard of hearing in this thread except Kristina.
