THE Namibian National Association for the Deaf (NNAD) in collaboration with ClaSH Namibia, a welfare organization that promotes the rights of children with language, speech and hearing impairments in the country has developed a health sign language poster.

The unique poster, the first of its kind in Namibia, depicts a variety of health issues.

The draft landmark poster was designed using Nami-bian sign language with the aid of Namibian sign language interpreters

At a recent event to introduce the poster to a representative of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Heide Beinhauer of ClaSH said the need for the poster emanated from a shortage of health information campaigns for people with hearing disabilities.

She said that health issues are only addressed via conventional methods of communication, leaving the hearing impaired in the dark.

Beinhauer stressed that depending on funding and resources, his organization is looking at implementing posters that will also inform the hearing impaired on other current socio-issues in the country.

Although the better part of the poster is still in the production stage in terms of print, according to Beinhauer they intend to distribute close to 2 000 posters countrywide for use at state hospitals and clinics.

Apart from this, the posters would also be given to various welfare organizations to bring to light the plight of the hearing impaired in the country, provided that different entities express interest in it.

At the same occasion, principal of the Windhoek School for the Deaf, Geoffrey Nambira, expressed happiness stating that the poster would play a great role in assisting Namibians with hearing impairments to be kept abreast of topical health related issues.

The poster was made possible with funding from the Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF).
