Union church to host special worship service for the deaf, Jan. 15 | NJ.com

On Sunday, Jan. 15, Grace Lutheran Church and St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church for the Deaf, 2222 Vauxhall Road, Union, will welcome the Rev. Ron Friedrich of Christ Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Silver Spring, Maryland, as its guest speaker for its 10:30 a.m. worship service that day. This date marks the 75th Anniversary of the first Deaf worship service held at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church for the Deaf, located in Newark at the time.

After worshiping in Newark for a number of years, St. Matthew’s moved to Clifton for a few years before relocating in the facilities of Grace Lutheran Church in Union. The hearing congregation of Grace and the Deaf congregation of St. Matthew’s have been worshiping together for almost 10 years. The weekly Sunday morning worship service at 10:30 (9:30 in the summer) is interpreted for the Deaf. In addition, there is a monthly interpreted Bible study for the Deaf following the 10:30 a.m., worship service the first Sunday of each month. Other seasonal worship services, such as midweek Advent and Lent worship services, Christmas, Holy Week, Ascension and Thanksgiving worship services are also interpreted for the Deaf, as well as are

Dinner Theaters that the members of Grace put on.

Members of the Deaf community are especially welcome to join in on these worship services, Bible studies and fellowship events, as is the hearing community.
