Senate fails to pass unemployment benefit extension - KWWL.com - News & Weather for Waterloo, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids & Iowa City, Iowa |

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Federal lawmakers are voting not to extend jobless benefits to the nation's workers. Thursday, 57 senators said "no" to ending a Republican filibuster for the unemployment bill, effectively killing the measure.

According to Iowa Workforce Development Deputy Director Joseph Walsh, this has impacted 6,700 Iowans since benefits expired on June 2nd. Each week that passes, 1,500-2,000 more will see their aid expire. And it's not just unemployed men and women who will feel the effects.

"I think it's going to be devastating to our recovery. I think... I don't think people have fully thought through how bad this is going to be for us," he said.

The Senate decision means a worker who files for unemployment benefits can only get help for up to 26 weeks. Walsh said, that's fine, in a normal economy. But look through a recent help wanted page, and you can see why he said, right now, people need more help.

"There's still not enough jobs out there for everybody to be fully employed," said Walsh.

If people don't have enough money to live on, Walsh believes the entire community suffers.

"How many more people will face home foreclosures? How many people will be evicted because they can't pay rent? How much money will the local grocery store lose because people can't pay for food?" he noted.

That's what he hopes lawmakers will consider when, or if, the issue comes back up for a vote.

"I think the message has been spelled out to congress pretty clearly of how important this is, so part of me, I just can't imagine that they won't act on it," he added.

Iowa's senators were split on the decision. Republican Senator Charles Grassley voted "no", Democrat Tom Harkin said "yes" to the bill.

"If there's one thing that I hear from my constituents, it's that congress has to stop deficit spending. The package of tax credits and unemployment benefits has yet to pass the senate for one reason, and that's the fact that it adds to the trillions in debt we're passing on to our kids and grandkids. These are important programs, but there's no reason we can't cut bloated spending in other parts of the budget to pay for them. Republicans offered a plan that included the same provisions, and was fully paid for. It was a win-win for everybody, but the democratic leadership blocked it," Grassley stated.

Harkin said "We've tried for eight weeks. The republicans have consistently said no. I just talked to the leader. I think we may try it one more time next week before the fourth of July, but it looks like the republicans are unyielding. They will not let us get unemployment benefits to people who are out of work, and that...is unconscionable. In my 35 years here, I have never seen anything like this. Never.

Walsh said there are other programs in place for folks searching for a job. He recommended all unemployed workers should stop by their local office to learn about their options.

Not good news for the people who are trying to survive and get more chance to find other job before it expires.

But sadly there are many who are drawing unemployment and just riding the system and have no intentions of even looking for a job. One of my relatives has been doing this for the last 18 months. It will be two years February 1st if she continues on. No job, no car, 3 children (all of which have different fathers, 2 are unknown), lives in Section 8 housing (believes anything over $20/month in rent is too much), receives WIC and Foodstamps (EBT), and uses the private assistance programs to pay her utilities. Her last two vehicles have been flat out repossessed and her children got to witness that in broad daylight. And she receives daycare vouchers for her two youngest children and her oldest attends public school. While they are gone all day she goes to her mother's house and plays on the computer all day and eats her mother's food. Has not even the slightest inclination to even look for work. She knows not to ask me for money as I would flat out tell her to go to the nearest McDonald's and instead of asking for food, ask for an application. I have even considered asking for an application myself and taking it to her. People like her make me  :mad2:

I wouldn't say that is typical, though. I know plenty of people who are looking earnestly for work and need the extension.

what is the excuse? There are plenty of jobs out there that no one wants to take. Like I said many times in the past, the secret to success in getting better job has not changed. Start from somewhere in bottom, like McDonalds, Burger King, several positions that involves dishwashing, toilet cleaning etc. Mind you, I know no one likes these positions, including myself and I took it and it was only 6 weeks for me and I ended up got better job.

Wanna proof? Don't you realize that more and more employers rather hired those who already hold a job or two. Don't believe this? Here is link to give you a real and pride swallowing proof.

Out-of-work job applicants told unemployed need not apply - Jun. 16, 2010

Now you see why quitting job is worse than getting fired from job, which we had debated on another thread. So, if you got lousy job and hate your boss, DON'T quit! Look for another job while deal with lousy boss.

I think there is too many extensions already, and I do not think it is good idea to give another extension.

So, if you are uneployed and struggling trying to find job, then get lousy job first, and even there is no guarantee, but with good attendance, and determination on rock bottom jobs, you will climb up.

The real purpose for employer wants you to start bottom is what? To see your attendance, if you maintain high attendance rate, you will guaranteed to offer better jobs. I have seen enough Deaf AND hearing employees who don't give damn about attendance and considering it as employer's problem, guess what I saw at the end? They all ended up unemployed. Time for you to wake up and start somewhere bottom.

For my own experience, the last 10 years have proved myself over and over again. Mind you I wish I had done this way 30 years ago, and I struggling for first 20 years, all because I refused to start from the bottom. 10 Years ago, I finally decided to give the bottom a try and it proved me that it worked.

I don't care if they don't want job and wants to stay on welfare, that is fine because they won't get much out of welfare. Welfare only gives you enough to get by that is it. What I do pissed off is that when they whine and complain that there is not enough money from welfare and can't find job. If you really want to make more money, quit whining and complain, start somewhere even though it is lousy pay. It will grow from there, trust me. It is all about ATTITUDE.

People like that make me sick!...Lazy good for nothing bums!...And I have a relative the same way....

Ummm, this bill also had moneys to aid states with their rising health care costs and the states will now be forced to cut programs or increase taxes. Education programs in particular will suffer.

Hello?

The more people out of work the more it cost government and taxes, so whats excuse? If everybody took this advise that I just gave, trust me there won't be any problems with government spending.

Do the math.

What work? If jobs are filled, there's still plenty more people still have no jobs. How are you gonna find jobs for them when there is none?

With the new health care law, full time jobs will become a thing of the past, as "contractors" and "temps" will replace it, leaving jobbers with no health insurance and facing fines and jail time for violating the health care law.

I care for my wife 24/7 who is very sick and bedridden. I'd like a job, but Medicaid is only allowing 60 hrs a month, that leaves me 2 hrs on M, W & F and 3 hrs on T, Th & Sat each week. Not alot of time to go to work and have to be back before the nurse aid has to leave and my wife cannot be left alone under any circumstances, too many risk factors involved.

Those Senassholes don't give a flying crap about human beings, to them we're just trash that needs to be sent to the dumps.

All they care about is sticking up to the rich and make them richer while leaving the rest of us poorer.

I understand the situation that you are, and I applaud you for being faithful husband to her.

There is not an end to the world. There are ways to work out. Most employers, including rich people LOVES those who are truly a problem solvers. Most employers and rich people do not like hear whining and complaining as it is really a major turns off for them.

America, it is land of opportunities. If I were you, what do you think I would do? Here is the answer, start NETWORKING. There are plenty of people out there that are in same shoes that you are into. There are solutions inside the networking. I would then find those couples that have similiar problems and work on together like maybe become roomate or next door neighbor so that two healthy guys/gals can work in rotation so one can go to full time job and come back home so that other can go to full time job. This WILL end up getting good health care in the end after finding better job when starting bottom. Also, when you do networking, you will never know who you run into, and there is rewards for networking.

My point is FORGET the rich people, focus on your own peers and work from there. Once you do that, these rich people will admire you and will give you something you would least expected. That is because rich people loves problem solvers.

under Obamacare - your wife will get a better health care than Medicaid. So will you... even if you have no job. The rich will be paying for you and your wife.

Beside - Obamacare leads to no jobs or less jobs? I don't see how.
