The Star Seaside Fund children received special treatment aboard the SAA flight when the captain ordered the plane to fly over the Joburg central business district - something most air travellers rarely experience.
The deaf children had just returned from a 10-day trip to Durban.
Thanks to the generous readers of The Star and South African Airways, 120 children from underprivileged backgrounds had the experience of a lifetime when they saw the sea for the first time. Before that, the children had their first flying experience.
Before boarding their flight back to Joburg on Friday, the captain came to greet the children and have pictures taken with them. He had requested special permission to fly over the city centre before landing at Johannesburg International Airport.
The special passengers from the Katlehong School for the Deaf and Blind, St Vincent School and M C Kharabhai were also given additional snacks before landing in Joburg.
Sibulelo Malapela (13) cited her highlights, through an interpreter, as swimming, the food and meeting new deaf friends.
Gordon Phake, project co-ordinator for The Star Seaside Fund, appealed to other companies to get involved in this good cause by sponsoring a child. The trip costs R1 600 for each child. Phake said the journey was conducted 12 times a year.
