Two pose as deaf & mute, steal mobiles

Two persons accused of stealing people’s mobile phones by posing as deaf and mute were arrested along with an accomplice by city police on Monday. Police have recovered 15 stolen instruments from the trio.

A resident of Junavadaj, Ranjeet Nat (19) and a resident of Ranip, Deva Nat (20), according to police, used to visit various student hostels in the city by posing as deaf and mutes. “They would show them a fake identity card of a city-based organisation for handicapped persons and after being allowed entry into the room, they would steal students’ valuables, mostly their mobile phones,” Ghatlodia police sub inspector, C K Babariya said.

Along with the two, police have also arrested a resident of Ranip, Dinesh Raval (24), who is accused of buying the stolen instruments from the duo and selling them to others, police said.

A team of city-police arrested Ranjeet and Deva on Saturday evening, during a routine security check near Chandlodia. Police recovered six mobile phones from the duo. “On being questioned, the duo confessed to having flicked the instruments from some students’ hostels in the city,” police said.

Based on the two’s confession, police arrested Raval later on Sunday. “We have recovered a total of 15 mobile phone, including those the trio had resold,” Babariya said. Police said how the two manage to get a fake identity card, was a matter of investigation.
