WLBT 3 - Jackson, MS: Two on Leave at Mississippi School for the Deaf
The State Department of Education has confirmed that two people in leadership positions are on leave at the Mississippi School for the Deaf.
That comes after Dr. Hank Bounds, State Superintendent of Education conceded that he understood the frustrations of students who were protesting some teachers not properly signing at the school.
He confirmed at least four teachers did not sign.
20 students at the school protested tuesday about the teachers not being able to speak to them in sign language. While Dr. Bounds understands why the students are upset he thinks it was inappropriate for the them to "walk out of class."
An investigation is underway by Dr. Bounds at the school about what led to the protest. WLBT News has learned that Sandra Edwards, elementary school Principal, has been put in charge at least temporarily over the Elementary and High schools. Dr. Rosie Pridgen, Superintendent of the Blind School is now acting as superintendent of both the blind and deaf schools.
