tuesday's presidential inauguration

I don't think they're giving up their ranch; I think they're going to alternate between the two. I think the ranch will be their country get-away home.

no, they aren't. according to cnn, they are going to keep both, but their home in dallas will be their primary residence.

i agree with shel as well. inasmuch as i can't stand bush, i would never think about booing him. that's just tacky.

I agree that it was tacky to boo our former President. Although I do not think highly of Bush, that was just disrespectful.

I guess I am very sensitive about that cuz I was in DC when 9/11 happened so it is not a word I would like to see being thrown around lightly. I guess it is too personal for me.

Same here, shel90. I was in D.C. and some of my classmates' parents died in 9/11. So I feel the same way about you. Some of my relatives were feet away from death. I think the word "terrorist" is used way too lightly, along with some other words like "apartheid" and "bipolar." I wish people would realize just how heavily something like terrorism affects some people's lives, way beyond airport security.

To call Obama a terrorist is really a low blow. I wish that people wouldn't just resort to name-calling when they don't agree with someone's politics.

my neighbor told me via my telebraille that the sun was shining brightly in washington d.c. today. how ironic that the heavens were smiling down upon obama. :)

It was very bright and sunny! It was also cold, but in the crowd it was warmer from the collective body heat. <smile>

My hubby heard people booing Bush when he left AFB...I thought that was so wrong. Sure, he wasnt a great president but it just seems too cruel.

... Yeah, I read some news and I think that's a shame :(

I just hope everything for his family and him that will smooth and simple.

There was definitely noticeable booing when Bush went up. Obama also made some sleights towards Bush during his speech, which I was very surprised about. However he did start out his speech by thanking Bush for his "generosity and cooperation."

I try not to judge politics too harshly, though. It is really very hard to get into politics without getting your hands bloody. Who knows how any of us would fair under the pressure that politicians deal with from a day to day basis.

Serious? I might be missed some of the video clip yesterday. Hmm...

They were subtle but they were there. At least they were towards Bush's politics and not the man himself. I'm not sure if you saw this part of the speech. He said he would not give us a "false choice between our safety and our ideals." He also mentioned our "collective failure to make hard choices," which I'm assuming is a reference to Bush's poor choices surrounding Iraq.

I think it was in the 30's. Today it's 34 degrees. It wasn't that cold in general but it was cold if you're out there for hours on end (not in the crowd). It took me 2.5 hours to get home (by foot) and I was frozen by the time I got home. <laughs>

when i came home from the hospital today, my cab driver told me that there was only 1 porta potty per every 400 people. he also told me that many people were blocks away from obama and couldn't see anything, but they chose to attend the inauguration simply so that they could say they were there.

Yes! The bathroom situation was a disaster! Plus they only had porta potties in the gated areas. So I either had to wait in line for hours to go to the bathroom or find a bathroom elsewhere. And the security was so tight that no hotels or restaurants in the vicinity would let me use the bathroom. So I ended up wandering all the way over from First and D to H and 6th (8 blocks down and 6 blocks over) before someone would let me use their restroom. Suffice to say, it was gross walking around in that condition.

I heard the same thing about the view. It's true, the electricity of the moment was amazing, even those most people couldn't see anything. (For once we were all on the same page. <wink>)

My cousin who works in DC as a political analyst for an agency said this about Bush when I comment about people booing him said this...

I don't think Bush earned a drop of respect from me - he stole an election; lied to the public to bring us into an unnecessary war where thousands of young Americans and over a million Iraqi's have been killed; eviscerated habeas corpus and innumerable other principles; brought torture back; polarized this country; destroyed our economy; turned fat budget surpluses into record deficits; and led an economic policy that made the rich richer and the poor poorer. And he hasn't shown a bit of remorse about any of it. None! So I didn't feel sorry for him as he got booed.

wow. i disagree with your cousin shel. booing former president bush is just rude.

I agree that the things Bush did are awful, but I don't think booing him does any good. After all that doesn't solve any problems. I'm just happy he's out of office.

i wouldn't even boo palin despite how much i can't stand her. like i said, it's just plain rude.

My hubby's response to my cousin...

Your 100% right xxx, W did everything you said, including funding AIDS medication and research in Africa, establishing ICOR, AFICOM, created the biggest Federally protected Land and Oceanic zones since Yosemeni, and increased the average pay of service men and women greater than any president in history. Don't get me wrong I agree he's done some absolute horrible things as president and will probably go down in history as the worst president in the past 50 to 70 years. With all that he's still a human being doing what he thought was right at the time and deserves the respect we all deserve.

They both work in politics so their views are interesting...
