We go tubing on the lake every summer. My son just received his implant. He of course will not be wearing the external part while tubing.....but I am now wondering if it will be safe with the internal part...as far as injuries to the head. We are always bumping each other and the tube flips and we hit the water pretty darn hard.

I mentioned it to the surgeon today and he said probably use a helmet but make sure it us on loose and heavy padding......not sure how to go about finding or fitting this.....

Maybe this is a sport we should give up? Any thoughts? Any other tubers out there.....what do you do?

I have an Cochlear Implant since July 2007. I go swimming-almost every day and have no fear of damaging the "internal processor". In order to damage the internal processor one would require a "massive skull injury".

To me your son is quite safe and enjoy water activities in peace.

A helmet is always a good precaution. but there's no need for heavy padding....
Enjoy!!
