Can training dogs sniff out pressure cookers with black powders inside?
 
Pressure cookers are pretty well sealed. Assuming they cleaned all the explosive residue off the outside after they made it then probably not.
 
Homeland Security are worried about bombing pressure cookers if dogs can't sniff.
 
Maybe there could be trace residue on the bags in which they hide the bombs, or on the clothing of the bombers.

That is tough, yes.
 
I think what it comes down to is if there are any molecules for the dog to sniff. Residue left on the outside of the container or clothing can be smelled. Plastics can leak scent through. A bad o-ring on a pressure cooker might leave enough but if done perfectly then there wouldn't be anything there to smell.

I don't know from bombs/pressure cookers...but dogs can smell cancer, detect on-coming seizures, can be trained to locate and alert on the tiniest amount of the odor that was remaining on a in-use semi truck parking lot <and the lot had not been used as a search site since the previous year - but a dog found odor source> and so on. And yes, the bedbugs. So my guess is that a dog could be trained to detect what Chevy asks about-

yes because of residue all over the place.

however - if the terrorists do it in a vacuum-sealed or sterile environment and carefully pack the bomb inside the pressure cooker and thoroughly clean the outside of the package... then the dogs will most likely miss it.
 
There was case where accuracy of dog nose raise question in court. I can't remember what case it was about but I do recall that testimony did testified that dog nose is not 100% accurate. I wouldn't depend on dog nose exclusively, need variety of tools, skills, and other than dog related equipments.

Like what Jiro said depends on how smart criminal/terrorist are; the more smarter they are, more lethal they becomes.
 
Dogs can detect drugs that are wrapped in plastic and boxed. A dog can detect explosive material in a pressure since nothing is hermitically sealed. I think I read where dogs smell around the atom level

Oh yes they can....I saw a documentary about training dogs out in Russia to thwart extremist Chechens and one of the participants had a single grain of sand in a packet that he was told to hide and the dog still found it. It wasn't sand actually but a chemical that is often used in explosives.

Right, but a single grain can give off plenty of sent. I don't know if pressure cookers can seal enough and you'd have to do a heck of a job not to contaminate the outside but dogs cannot smell through solid steel.
 
It doesn't matter since anyone can drop it off and leave within 10 min before bombing so where are the dogs at that time? That's what happened at the Boston Marathon.

I believe that alot of stadiums don't allow backpacks and other things like that anyway. Same thing at some conventions.
 
Dogs aren't the solution to the entire problem. They are one very useful tool in a bigger plan. They will be more affective in some situations than others.
