I have Acer Aspire 5040 Wlmi that have AMD Turion 64, 60GB hdd, Wireless, Ethernet and Phone modem ports, 4 USB 2.0, and 1 SVGA port (for external monitor).

It's so so. Battery life is short (1 1/2 hr) cuz I have 15.4 WXGA wide screen (It dims when I unplug the charger but not dim enuf. I had to dim down till it stopped. I still can see screen fine). It have great customer support. The first day I got the laptop. Slim drive DVD RW konked out and I called and they sent me box and I put it in box and mailed it. They fixed it under warranty and mailed back and it ran like charm. It had few hardware issue (CPU overheating due to covered fan port underneath causing error message popping up while running Windows). Luckily I got it free from my friend that I helped selling item in Ebay. Whew!!!

I would go for smaller 13inch or 12inch LCD screen Dell or HP laptops. But I would rather go for different brand like Gigabyte, Asus or any High Quality motherboard manufacturer name that sells Laptop too. They have high quality hardwares and would works with Linux very well. Dell currently offer Ubuntu for it's laptop in Europe now.

Any laptop with core duo and intel video card (GMA) would help to save alot of battery life, that what I noticed about that.

I'm surprised about your laptop have short battery life, I guess it's AMD that feeds alot of battery, plus same with ATI video card too.

Dell in USA offers linux for laptop.

Yup, I was explain about combined with core 2 duo and intel video card, that helps to expands more battery life.

I'm considering to get gaming laptop in later but intel video card is no way for me.

Mine is a bit more than 1 year old. Originally, When I first got my new Acer lappy. The battery life was a bit more than 2 hours long. Since that it had been used often and always plugged to power outlet. I do unplug and use it outside or around the house. I think that's why battery gotten old. Mine is just 6 pack Li Ion battery. Acer offer 12 pack Li Ion battery for longer life. I'm not going to replace battery anyway.

Newer lappy have better battery life. Newer SMALLER lappy have 4 to 7 hours of battery life. Any lappy that have 15.4 inch or 17 inch screen are a battery killer..

I saw VAIO lappy at Micro Center which have 12 in WXGA wide screen and it's VERY thin!! It is almost 3 credit card thick. It is slim and have DVD drive. But cost is $2000 Yike!! Cost lot more than my big lappy. I was afraid to buy it cuz of it's extremely thin display that might break like toothpick.

Soon in next 5 - 10 years, Laptops will have NO MOVING parts like hard drive and DVD drive. Not even fan too. It will have modular processors, MRAM (Magnetic Random Access Memory) and thin display. It would be very thin lappy perhap thick as Times magazine (I sure hope they added brace to prevent snapping lappy in half by accident ). If you close the laptop display and take it somewhere. It'll store what you left off. Once you open it and it'll immedialy turn on and ready to go what you left off. (If you power off and later power on, It'll boots up to desktop ready to use in less than 15 sec!!) It's battery WOULD have very long life from 9 to something hours!!!

there's all ready out an new Lappy, with flash drives being 76 GB, which is not heaps compared to today's standards, but its not far below laptop's standards which hover between 80-120 GB HHD space. Sorry forgot the brand of that lappy, its pretty hard to find it on the net, except Samsung is not making and selling SSD- Soild State Drives, at the moment its 32Gb.....

Reckon this tranformation will happen sooner than we'd think

lol, I would prefer HDD over flash drive or SSD cuz HDD can holds more spaces, as what I want.

My friend currently have a Toshiba Satellite. The battery it came with was not impressively qualified. It turned out that she wasn't the only one with a crappy battery - had to trade in her crappy one with another one and the laptop is now running better than it once was. Her laptop is now running okay without turning off on its own every 15-20 minutes, mainly from overheating. From my personal viewpoint, I'd prefer not to have a Toshiba one.

thank god i didnt get that one! mine never shots off...my dell use to do that sometimes..it was really annoying...mine usually lasts bout 8 hrs and i love it..plus not too heavy!!

Agreed!! I wouldn't buy Toshiba lappy. Acer is OK, Customer service was great and friendly but dunno what others say. (Luckily, I didn't buy the Acer lappy tho. Friend gave it to me as a "thankyou" gift for helping him sell stuff on Ebay). If I had cash to buy, I would go for smaller lappy that have high quality hardwares and good battery life. Smaller lappy is better for Air travel due to seating spacing issue. My Acer is too big and had to prop it in a "V" position and it's UNCOMFORTABLE!!, I got envy over those who had small lappy that fits nicely on "lunch" tray. Also compatible with Linux.

So whenever you're thinking of buying lappy, Think twice about travelling. Many business people and college students use smaller lappy to travel. So don't try to have big ego on 15 or 17 in Wide screen lappy (Tim Allen's Arr Arr). Small and simple are beautiful..
