I read the magazine about compare Terri Schavio with Kristen Wilke´s condtion. Very interesting...

How can you deal with awake coma patients?

The relatives of coma patients are often very helpless and do not know what/how they deal with those situation.

The presence of family already helps the patient.

It is not investigated yet, what humans feel in coma. Therefore the following things, the family should consider:

1. Take time and avoid yourselves every hectic.

2. Provide for body contact through caress or light massage.

3. Play patient´s favourite music. Tell her/him the positive news about family.

4. Put yourselves in such a way that the patient sees you.

5. Even if you do not get reaction for a long time a reaction - Do not become impatient or furious.

6. Do not put uncontrolled meals into patient´s mouth. It could be swallow itself or even suffocate itself.

7. Take care of thoughtless expressions at the patient bed. Do not burden your relatives with your own problems.

8. Please make sure that the rehablitation measures begin for the patient something like that gymnastic or discussion training as early as possible.

9. Do not give up!

My next post about Kristen Wilke come few minutes.

Kristen Wilke woke up after 100th day in coma.

10,000 people fall in wake coma in Germany. Nobody knows whether they awake or let them die. Kirsten Wilke survived this Albtraum after 100 days in awake coma.

Before coma, 27 years old Kirsten Wilke was very temperature lady and sense of humor. She loves to learn the world and travel alot. She work successfully as a foreign language secretary, had a nice attic dwelling (apartment) and plan her future with her boyfriend.

Kirsten´s life and her parents christa (66) & Detlef (71) changed suddenly on 9th January 1993 around midnight. Kirsten vomited suddenly, breathe stertorously and can´t speak any longer. Her boyfriend called an emergency immediately. Kirsten said “I would of die if my boyfriend is not around".

In the hospital the doctors found a severe brain bleeding. They operated her. Afterwards she lied for an appropriate 40 days in coma and fell then awake coma for 2 months. (difference: opened eyes).

Our daughter had to be artificially feeding tube. It was so terrible to see her so helplessly attached to machines "says Christa Wilke.

Also the doctors made no hope for an anxious parents. They doubted that Kirsten would wake up ever again. Their parents sit around the clock at their daughter´s bedside. They stroked and massaged her joints, read her the stories and played her favorite music again and again." 100 days long!

Christa Wilke is ashamed, when she admits: Naturally I thought it would be better, if Kirsten could die peacefully. They talked about the case of Terri Schiavo from the USA´s case. They knows that Kirsten´s brain stream were however measurable but Terris Schiavo´s brain had drained. They fought until Kristen survived after 100th day.

Kirsten explains:"Switching off is a murder. My parents did not do it!"

Kirsten described her feeling during coma time: “I can´t remember and heard and felt nothing”. Their parents know that the fight for their daughter was worthwhile. Christa Wilke said: “she did not believe any longer when she saw Kirsten´s fingers movement but it was happened ever more frequently. That gave us strength to fight for Kiristen until she found the way back in the life at last." But she can´t swallow, not eat alone and does not go - was helpless like a baby. Rehablitation measures followed such as gymnastic, speaking and walking training. Each small progress was an enormous success.

Today Kristen is almost healthy again, speaks English again. But her memory is no good. Exact tarpaulins and acting are not possible. All what they do is improve Kristen´s healthy condition is go to neuropsychological treatment. She learn to train their memory there but she will be able to work as her career again. She also cannot get back into her old life and can´t even do any more. The damage is too large. Christa said: her daughter Kristen will always need her parents support and also accompany, too.” The parents are worried about Kristen´s future and said: “what become Kristen, if we are no longer there for her?" Kristen´s father Detlef Wilke beground the association "Ark Nova" and said: “We want to make sure that the people like our daughter in 'group house for handciapped to live together". Kirsten can lead almost normal independent life.

Independence.
The 39 years old Kristen can do herself like make a tea, etc. She practised for many years. Kirsten is proud what she can do herself.

Common walks.
Trips with parents to everywhere and make a walk, etc. It makes Kristen a big joy.

See the picture where I scan from magazine... Interesting...
