K so i had my first appt of the week with my tinnitus specialist. Wow..was that ever interesting..she brought up the subject of TRT and wearing a tinnitus masker. Well first i was thinkin bout it..but then i thinkin wait a min...that wouldnt work too well seeing as i have a hearing problem..lol. So i said this n she thought about it for a min or 2 n then was like..oo i didnt think of that, i guess ur right. N then my grandma who took me was like how much are they? the specialist was like around 3200 canadian with tax. My grandmothers face was one of surprise! mine too actually lol. Didnt think they would be that expensive. Then she went on to tell me wat my results were from my last audiogram...she tells me "oo uve only lost 30 db of hearing in ur right ear and about 20-25 in ur left". Now correct me if im wrong..but ONLY 30 dB of lost hearing..compared to ppl that have no hearing problem...thats kinda dumb to say no? I mean my hearing isnt as bad as most peoples with hearing probs..but come on..Now ive noticed a drop in my hearing since my last audiogram n my next appt is friday..so we'll see how that is.

Anyways i shud shut up now..lol..hope everyone had a safe and fun 4th of July!

Interesting to hear. I to have tinnitus. I have to make an appointment to get a hearing test done.

I am scared that they are going to tell me that I have lost alot of my hearing. I have noticed lately that I have to realy concentraite when someone is talking to make sure I "hear" them.

ok that is the end on my post lol. I would love to have someone to talk to while I go through this. No one around here really understands what I am going through.

There are more people than you think in here that have some form of tinnitus. It is very common with people with hearing losses. I had it mildly myself prior to my CI. The CI implant cured it as I haven't had it since.

Tinnitus doesn't always accompany a hearing loss...sometimes a hearing person will have it. For instance, you might've had a history of ear infections as a child, or you may have allergies or sinus problems...those things can cause it. For me it's always been there and it can be annoying on occasion, but I'm inclined to think it's not really anything to worry about in my case.

But either way it goes for you, I'm sure there are some people here who will be very good to you. :)

Ya they think i have the hearing loss and the tinnitus due to my many ear infections when i was little and i ruptured my ear drum a couple times too in my right ear which is worse in hearing then the left. Was frusterating to hear her (the specialist) say i ONLY lost 30 dB...thought that was a little stupid of her to say...She was also telling me how hearing people have tinnitus too and that everyone in their life will experience it some way or another...

Ouch! I don't think mine ever ruptured, but that sounds painful! I had a lot of ear infections, and sometimes if my allergies are bad my ears will hurt--but that had to SUCK. :(

BTW, good taste in coffee. ;)

I don't mean to come off as "deafer than thou" but 30 db isn't a terribly life ending ammount of hearing loss. the only tones I can hear softer than 30 db are a very very narrow range at 2khz (at roughly 30 db) and another very narrow range at 250hz. (somewhere between 20 and 25 db) And that's in my good ear. (in my left ear I hear nothing -- last time I had a hearing test we went over 100 db, but at that point I can't tell if I'm hearing it in my left ear or if I'm hearing it with my right ear because the vibrations go through my skull. probably the later)

With a loss of only 20 decibles, your hearing is still "normal".

As far as a tinitus masker, you should definately give it a try. The fact that you have a hearing loss dosn't affect the way a tinitus masker works. Tinitus starts in the ear but severe tinitus is in the brain. I've read about people who have had surgen cut their auditory nerve and they still had tinitus.

Like i said before in my first post...i know that my hearing is still "normal" and obviously NOT as bad as other peoples. I never said i was comparing... and since i have severe tinnitus it doesnt help the fact that i have trouble hearing either. Not sure if u have tinnitus yourself, but try not hearing things and hearing a very loud ringing in ur ears All the time. Im not trying to say woe is me..thats not wat im here for...

Also the tinnitus maskers are very expensive, almost double the usual amount cuz they are made in the U.S. and i live in canada...so if i get them and they dont work id be a little screwed..plus my mom is a single mom and im only 17 so money does get taken into account...

My specialist also asked if i have tried to listen to classical music or nature sounds similar to the ones i listen to now on my noise machine on my mp3 player at school and during tests since my tinnitus also bothers me during the day...which i have tried and since i have the mp3 player on playing the nature sounds (at a low level, mixing in with the tinnitus so that i dont notice it)(similar to wat the maskers would do)..the only problem tho is while listening to the sounds in my ear and trying to listen to other things it's a little hard...

Again my hearing isnt that bad...i know, but stated by many doctors and specialists, any amount of hearing loss even a slight one can hurt ones ability to learn. Especially at a young age. Not saying that i am young, but im still in high school and I've had a horrible time ever since the tinnitus started and my hearing started to decrease. So no offense to you farmer joe, not trying to start an argument here but thats just my opinion of things. Everyones hearing and hearing situations are different, so please dont come here and tell me how your hearing is worse. I came to AD to find people to help me, to give me advice, and to have people to kno wat having ANY type or degree of hearing loss is like. Also seeing as i had perfect hearing up until high school started i can say it's a big enough change even for your hearing to go down "slightly" and out of nowhere. So, pardon me if i come across as a little apprehensive to your comment Farmerjoe.
