He may get up to 10 years of jail and also force him to repay the car owners who lost the cars. King county should have more tougher laws for people who steal cars. Seattle metro area has the one of the highest car thefts in the US behind Phoenix and other regions.
'Record' thief suspected of stealing 136 cars
October 5, 2006
SEATTLE - King County prosecutors on Thursday charged a man that they believe is responsible for dozens of car thefts throughout Seattle.
Liam Moynihan, 23, was charged with 25 counts of first-degree theft for allegedly stealing cars, but prosecutors think he ripped off many more vehicles.
Prosecutor spokesman Dan Donahoe said that detectives suspect Moynihan of stealing 136 cars over a six-month period, which would make him the most prolific car thief on record in King County.
Moynihan's alleged crime spree began in November 2005 and kept going until Seattle Police arrested him for stealing a car in May 2006.
Donahoe said that after Moynihan was arrested, Seattle police detectives took him on "field trips" where Moynihan showed investigators the many locations from which he stole vehicles.
The normal sentence range for the 25 charges would be 43 to 57 months in prison, but Donahoe said that King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng will seek a 10-year sentence if Moynihan is convicted. He added that they will try to force Moynihan to repay the car owners.
Moynihan is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in King County Superior Court on Wednesday.
