The use of pain killers - an addict's choice? Or unfortunate circumstances?

Now, people are discussing the common use of pain killer drugs which can cause people to become addicted. MJ's death is prompting a more closer look at celebrity stars who often have easy access to these opiate/opioid drugs. Doesn't matter if it killed MJ or not though the article notes that it was a regular part of MJ's drug therapy (perhaps wait for more confirmation on this and the toxicology report?). Drugs like Oxycontin (where have I heard that drug before? Rush Limbaugh? The druggie guy?) and Demerol are the two popular pain killer drugs of choice. No matter how uncomfortable you might be discussing this it's good to bring about awareness over sensitive issues. Overall increased awareness may actually help people in the short and long run of things and it may actually save lives.

At this point the cause for MJ's death is still all speculation. We do not yet know what caused his death and we may not know for certain for the next several weeks.


While I agree that awareness about addiction to opiate/opiod drugs is needed, I am not going to speculate on if MJ was hooked because I do not have the info regarding MJ's medical history.

I agree...I have never experience addiction to a chemical but I have seen people close to me struggle with kicking their addiction. I cant imagine how difficult it must be.
 
Stars addicted is certainly nothing new.

Peter Lorre and Bela Lugosi were both addicted to morphine back in the twenties.

I am sure there are many more instances but those come to mind.

With Hollywood fame comes lots of money, stress, and shady doctors who are only too glad to supply.
 
I have one such med in my pill basket and though I don't know anyone with this addiction, I wouldn't want it to happen to me. I don't use it unless I'm in a great deal of pain and I haven't used it in two months.
 
I believe that it goes both hand in hand with the use of the pain killer whether it's the addict's choice or under these unfortunate circumstances.

Whether it is about MJ or not - There are times where the addicts hits the rock bottom only to realize that they have to help themselves. We cannot help them unless they want the help for themselves.

Drugs and Celebrities has been ongoing around for eons. Even though there's speculations surrounding this; Perhaps, to see the bigger picture behind this is only to know if they really are at the point to be willing to get themselves in the hole.
 
Ben Franklin was known to use opium...

yeah he used to do some other wacky experiments. Ben Franklin used to record his flatulence and what made the worst smells :crazy:


know we know why he had such far out ideas huh....
 
I'm really starting to hate that every time a celebrity dies and drugs are said to be involved, people get on this negative kick about pain medications. Pain meds aren't something to be vilified and NOT every person who takes these meds will become addicted to them.

I don't really like painkillers.... it makes me drowsy. However I do use it IF I'm in pain that I can't focus, like cramps or really bad headache, then I will take the painkillers.

The strongest painkiller I have used is vidodin... I hated it.... I was so out of it.... lol

But yeah... there are people out there that are hooked onto painkillers.... its not a good thing.
 
one time I got on vicodin for 2 weeks straight. that was awesome cause i was pain free but i never went to the bathroom for a long time so i was screwed then. nowadays i go natural and if pain persists, i take tylenol.

It always depends on the circumstances.

Opiates aren't necessarily bad if they need them to manage pain. If they don't have pain and they keep taking it, it's a concern.

Rush Limbaugh is reputed to take several times the normal dose and that is not good as it can be lethal.
 
It's not fair to people with chronic pain that use drugs responsibly to ban them because a few celebrities get addicted. In the celebrity cases, the doctors gave them drugs because of their fame. The celebrities used multiple physicians to get more drugs. Why should regular people who follow the rules be punished because of that? It's crazy! :pissed:

In the state of Florida. One of the new Laws that will pass tomorrow is to prevent people from "Dr" shopping for pain pills. Each prescription that is written has to be registered. So once you have a prescription filled by one doctor. Another doctor writes one out. They can check online to see if you have purchased such prescribed pill within a certain time span. If so... You will be denied.
