"The nation's largest telephone and cable companies are crafting an alarming set of strategies that would transform the free, open and nondiscriminatory Internet of today to a privately run and branded service that would charge a fee for virtually everything we do online..."

I knew it was just a matter of time before corporations would see the gold mine in the Internet and try to squeeze as much money out of it as possible.
Ah well.

Internet was like that 15 years ago. What happened? Yawn! Trust me, this won't happen again.

 they want to record every move of what I'm doing on the internet? That's very ridiclious. Hey, now I'm very scared!

Just think about this... if they are to record every move you make. How much they are gonna gobble on their hard drive storage media? The Internet is really VAST sized network, Much bigger than anyone imaged.

Yep it's very BIG network! I do know it's unimaginable. That's why I laughed.

Ummm, diehardbiker, we ALREADY have the capability of storaging a whole dang universe of info.
But that is beside the point. About a year ago I worked for a rich guy in the Lake of the Ozarks area, in which we set up areas for his Wireless Internet service. His ambition is to cover the whole state of missouri. Anyway, he told me that "within a couple years" most of the Internet providers that are around today will go belly-up and dialup will cost about 50 a month (the same amount he charges for his Wireless service). I just dunno. He is a SMART dude and I wouldn't be so fast in dismissing him with an inane giggle.

Well, we do also have to remember that prices for hard drive memory--as well as flash memory--are dropping as well as the parts becoming much smaller and easier to work with. So the key question to ask would be, what is the ratio between increase in storage capacity and increase in information? It's going to depend on how long we go before we hit a point where we can't find ways to increase storage space available (while still keeping costs reasonable)...

There are hundred millions of users that use the internet. It would take millions or even billions of petabytes of data, so it will be probably impossible to keep track of everyone. Petabytes is 1 million gigabytes of data. There will be a 1 Terabyte hard drive coming out in 2007, as we already have a 500 GB hard drive out on sale right now.

Petabyte me one time. Thank God it didn't have rabies.
;)

That's NOT gonna happen....
Because No one "owns the Internet"

I learned from my former bosses I used to work
for the Internet Pioneers...They invented/developed it
many years ago with DARPA. It's an enriching experience
for me working for them. I still love doing that kind
of data research stuff on the Internet.

Bingo! That is another reason why I don't think this talk is going to become reality. It once did when Internet usage was clocked and charged by minutes. Not anymore.
