Termites ate $200k, bank claims
Police are investigating claims that termites ate $200,000 in rupee notes hidden in a safe at the State Bank of India.
Local officials initially tried to hide the loss but it was discovered when a new manager started working at the bank in Barabanki district, Uttar Pradesh, the Telegraph newspaper reports.
Indian officials found the notes reduced to dust in a currency chest at the bank and called in police and senior officials to investigate.
Police have not ruled out foul play.
But State Bank of India spokesman Geeta Tripathi said it looked like the money had been eaten.
The bank's branch manager said they had been struggling with the termite infestation.
"We have been trying our best to keep currency notes safe but the termite problem here is so enormous that it would be better to move the branch elsewhere," Sunil Dwivedi said.
There are fears the amount of money lost could be even higher as currency chest's generally hold around $9 million.
