SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Temecula/Riverside -- Teen's threats prompt lockdown at school for deaf
A juvenile whose alleged threats against a former girlfriend prompted a lockdown at a state-run school for the deaf in Riverside Thursday was taken into custody several hours later, authorities said.
The teenager, whose identity was withheld because of his age, allegedly sent a text message via cell phone to a female student at the California School for the Deaf in the 3000 block of Horace Street, telling her he was armed and on campus, said California Highway Patrol Officer George Foard.
He said the boy was bitter about a recent breakup with the girl, who had “started to see another student at the school.”
At 9:45 a.m., CHP officers converged on the campus, establishing a perimeter and securing the area, Foard said.
“Riverside police responded and assisted with the perimeter and the shutting down of the school,” he said. “The school was not evacuated at any time. After a thorough search of the school ... it was determined the suspect wasn't on campus.”
CHP took charge of the investigation because the school – though within city limits – is under state control.
The lockdown was lifted around 11:45 a.m., Foard said.
“The suspect's information was obtained from the involved parties,” he said. “A check through Verizon Wireless confirmed the suspect was never on campus.”
Investigators located and detained the teen for questioning early Thursday afternoon, according to Foard.
Classes resumed at the school following the lockdown, an administrator said.
