Teacher at school for deaf under fire for taping talkative students' mouths - The Mainichi Daily News
A teacher at a school for hearing impaired children has come under fire for attaching adhesive tape to the mouths and wrists of his students to punish them.
The 47-year-old teacher at the Okazaki School for the Deaf taped the mouths and wrists of four second-grade students after some of them failed to stop talking during class. The students cleaned their classroom after class before the tape was removed.
"I told them time and time again to stop talking, but they wouldn't," the teacher was quoted as telling school officials.
The school apologized to the students and their parents, saying the corporal punishment shouldn't have taken place.
According to the school, the teacher was an assistant homeroom teacher for a lower-grade class. On two separate occasions in December, the teacher threatened his students, saying, "I'll tape your mouth if you don't stop talking," and covered the mouths of three students with adhesive tape.
Another student who was at the scene urged the teacher to do the same with him, and the teacher reportedly wrapped his wrists with the tape.
After the class was over, the teacher had the students clean up the classroom with the tape intact before eventually removing it.
The teacher was removed from his post after the incident.
