I went to community college for one year. At the time, I took English 100. One day when I came to the class, I saw a different teacher. We were all told that the original teacher died in his sleep over the weekend. That was a first. I never had something like that happen to me before.

Now, I want to ask you. Let's say a teacher passed away or simply moved out of place. You have been given the rein. Will you continue on the course simply because it is what the syllabus is? Changing direction of course may mean crashing boat into iceberg. What will you do if you were put in that position?

Depends on:

(1) how many lessons did the first teacher teach your class? If not much, then easier to change plans.

(2) If I agree with what he planned to teach and how he planned to teach it, no problem. If I disagree, it depends on how strongly I disagree.

(3) Do I feel capable of doing what he planned? Everyone has different personalities, different strengths and weaknesses. One teacher's plan may not match another teacher. If the plans are typical, probably ok. If the teacher was quirky, who knows?

At our college, courses are developed at departmental level, so changing instructors shouldn't have much impact on the course overall. Naturally, each instructor has his or her own personality, style and emphasis. If a student picked that course because of a particular instructor, then that could influence the student to change. However, I assume English 100 is a required core course, prerequisite to all other courses, so it might do well to continue with it, unless the replacement instructor is a total disaster.

Personally, I would continue with the course. I don't like to start over.
