Taxing the Rich at Your Peril...the states.

No different than anywhere else in the world...

You may be a rich businessman selling kayaks, but you would go bankrupt if you go to Alberta for lower taxes...instead of staying in BC and suck up the higher taxes.

They won't be going anywhere.

Problem is, the state lose their tax revenues whenever they move. There are states that have much lower taxes. And there are 49 other states to choose from, too, and not just several provinces. Not all states taxes are the same.

for a very wealthy people.... there are very very very few states to pick.... like Florida, California, New Jersey, and New York. Because of those states, that's why they are very wealthy. It's close to their businesses. Again - they ain't going anywhere. let's see..... losing millions of bucks of revenue or.... few thousand bucks for tax..... :hmm:

let them bitch all they want. they still ain't going anywhere

Mr. Jiro got it.

exactly how are you going to make same amount of millions of dollars in New York if you pack up and move to...... say Montana or Oregon?

let me illustrate how a millionaire New Yorker lives since this article is about New Yorker. The wealthy man would just bitch and suck it up by paying $$$$ tax... while he still earn millions of dollars by taking advantage of cheap labor and selling overpriced server/products, live in mansion at upstate NY for weekend and condo with Central Park view in NYC during weekdays, and commute by limousine with personal driver. Meanwhile - he will try to garner influences from other parties (union members, boards, etc.) to donate campaign money to politician who can reduce the income tax for me, repeal labor/tax laws to put me on advantageous position, and to enact labor/tax laws to put my competitors at disadvantageous position so he can buy them out.

That's how the millionaire world works in New York, brah! :cool2:

The only millionaires who would do that are the ones who have been born into money or should I say "with a silver spoon in their mouths."

very few. most of them filthy rich because of companies they built or work for. Like it or not, they're the reason why our life is full of conveniences.

Yes Paris Hilton was born into money but she has her own companies too. That's why she's even richer than before... and ya'all made her very rich! (by watching her shows! for example)

But they are moving. And this is worrying NY where the greater percentage of their tax revenue base comes from rich people who live there. We're talking differences of in the millions, not a few thousand bucks.

Quite a few of the folks targeted for this new millionaires’ tax are going to find ways to shift income, defer income; some are going to leave the state altogether and give all their taxes to a different, less abusive government; some will reduce their efforts and voluntarily reduce their earned income and live off their investments. Those running companies will get the extra tax by cutting payrolls, delaying capital investments, and raising prices – so, ultimately, the millionaires’ tax is paid for them by non-millionaires. In fact, immediately, some high-profile, very rich New York residents announced plans to move elsewhere as state of primary residence. The extra tax bill would, arguably, not matter much or at all to them in strict monetary terms. But it matters to them in principle. They resent it, and they can respond. Punched in the nose, they punch back, or at least refuse to stand still for the next blow.

If the politicians actually think this will solve their deficit problems, they are idiots unable to tell fiction from fact. But maybe this is not about actually solving the state’s problems, anymore than Obama’s tax the rich schemes are about the incredible multiplying federal debt.
Obama Opposite Speak and NY's 'Millionaires' Tax'

Yeah, they're gonna stay right there and take it. You're playing them to be patsies.

As for favorable tax states:

1. Wyoming
2. South Dakota
3. Nevada
4. Alaska
5. Florida
6. Montana
7. Texas
8. New Hampshire
9. Oregon
10. Delaware

Guess which top three states are the worse unfavorable tax states and are experiencing budget problems?

Yup. NJ, NY, and CA. Followed by Ohio, RI, Iowa, Vt, Neb, and Minnesota.

There are many who worked their way up and made a thriving company of their own.

Yes, I know.

I am talking about those who were born with a silver spoon in their mouths like Paris Hilton. Someone like her would probably move to another state to avoid paying higher taxes. Just hypothetical speaking.

Here's a blog by a rich guy explaining why he's leaving NY to Florida.

This problem did not begin with the current recession. New York faced a $6 billion shortfall before the economic downturn. However in the face of economic turmoil Governor Paterson, Speaker Silver and Majority Leader Smith looked to the unions and special interests who answered with one voice: raise taxes.

Among other taxes and fees, they raised the marginal tax rate on the most successful (and most mobile) New Yorkers to 8.97 percent, the second highest rate in the nation.

It was irresponsible and it may just prove to be counterproductive since the top 1% of earners account for about 50% of state revenue. We’re the one who can—and will—leave.

It’s not an easy decision but I’m being forced away from my family and friends, pain shared by too many parents and grandparents in this state.

I’m leaving. And by domiciling in Florida I will personally save $13,800 every single day. That’s a pretty strong incentive.

Like I said, I love New York but I’m not going to pay any more for the waste, corruption and inefficiency that is New York State government.

Why I’m Leaving New York (but still trying to change it)

Let's see. $13,800/day * 365 days = 5,037,000. That's certainly more than just a few thousand bucks. Heck, would you move if you could save yourself $5 million dollars a year?

it does not matter. wherever you work, you must pay its income tax - regardless of the location of your residence. NJ-NY income tax is pretty hefty..... :(

Carpet bomb?

Ok.

Who Else is Moving Out of New York?
30

May

A Siena Research Institute study found that 11 percent of New Yorkers will move unless conditions improve and another 10 percent say they would like to move out “as quickly as I can.”

The same poll found a whopping 53 percent believe the state is moving in the wrong direction and only 33 percent saying our state is headed in the right direction.

Are you thinking of moving? Already left? Tell us about it in the comments section.

I HEARD!!! My friends from NYC tell me all about it.

"You heard the mantra, 'Tax the rich, tax the rich,'" Paterson said Wednesday at a gathering of newspaper editors at an Associated Press event in Syracuse. "We've done that. We've probably lost jobs and driven people out of the state."

"People aren't wedded to a geographic place as they once were. It's a different world," New York Lt. Gov. Richard Ravitch said.

Indeed. A different world.
