It is a Watchmen spin-off. (sort of)
This is actually based on a story that the teenage boy reads when he sit down next to the newspaper seller who keeps yapping about WWIII and everything.
The comic he read was about a man who was attacked by pirates from a ship to island as he lost his wife and kids along the way. It is actually a very violent and disturbing story thou it actually has some point about something between life and death...stuff like that. It's sorta complicated but still it is a very well written story indeed.
