A DEAF teenager at a city school who just five years ago could not read or write has been honoured in the institution's annual awards.

Mohammad Umar (15) won the Ridgway trophy at the Jack Hunt School awards in recognition of the outstanding progress he has made at the school.

Mohammad is profoundly deaf and arrived in the UK from Pakistan five years ago, unable to read or write.

He can now sign fluently, read English and is learning Urdu. Mohammad has also written a book, called "I'm deaf, but that's ok."
