Taitague bills help island's deaf - KUAM.com-KUAM News: On Air. Online. On Demand.

The Guam Association of the Deaf held its monthly meeting today at the Guam Legislature. Senator Telo Taitague says she scheduled the meeting to take place in Hagatna so lawmakers will have the opportunity to receive input and concerns

Taitague says the group currently has 60 members, but they don't have a permanent home to hold such meetings. In addition, she says she also wants to find ways to help even if it means proposing legislation.

The Republican lawmaker has introduced two bills - one to help indicate that the person is deaf through a driver's license, while another would allow the deaf to call 911. She explained, "This bill that will come out will require a symbol to be on the driver's license to indicate that they're deaf right off the bat as soon as the police officer sees the driver's license, he can tell and learn how to address the individual."

Senator Taitague added, "911 will have to have on hand a cellular phone where they can receive text messages from a deaf individual who is in need of emergency care right away."
