I'm not allowed to feed table scraps to my girlfriend's Mom's Maltese. I wish that the Maltese would learn ASL. That way, he would tell me, just feed me some, but not too much. Maybe he would convince the whole family that he wants to have table scraps. That he'll only eat little. Or that we would go somewhere out of sight and give him table scraps. As it stands, he has no table scraps, so he is sad.

You and your obsession to teach your dog and ferret ASL.
I can tell you what the dog is thinking. “I do not want the scraps, I want a chair and a steak to myself cooked medium”. While a cat is saying, “Move out of my seat”. Not sure about Ferrets thinking but Parrots thoughts are “I want nothing but fresh fruit and vegetables, and get over it because I will out live you and your kids sucker”. :giggle:

didnt know dogs could learn ASL

My deaf dog learned mostly standard dog obedience signs for sit, stay, down, etc. But I did teach her the ASL sign for STOP! and she knows when I sign that she dang better quit whatever she is doing, ROFL! :D

Sable thinks "stop" has a time limit of about 5 minutes

We've always trained our dogs to lie down and stay put when we are eating. No begging allowed. With Mika, she has digestive issues and is on special dog food, fish & sweet potato, so no people food for her. Could cost us a couple thousand dollars in vet bills! :eek3: Our previous dogs were not allowed to beg nor were fed from the table. But if there were tidbits like cut off fat from meat, safe bones for them, etc., they would get later in their bowls. That way meals were peaceful. :P

LOL! :laugh2: My Mika tries to look away --- what she doesn't see, she doesn't have to obey, right? :giggle: I am more stubborn than she is, though, and I just get in her face again with the STOP sign. :P Also, the intensity with which I sign STOP! conveys a lot, too... She knows to what degree, she is in trouble.

Once you feed a dog table scraps, that is all they are going to remember, and will sit at the table and wait. We don't feed the animals while we are eating. Doesn't happen often, but if there is something I want to give my dog, but don't want him to think I am actually giving it to him, I will pretend to drop something while moving dishes.

Sable will embarrass me at times, when I tell her to lay down, especially at a restaurant, she will do this pitiful look, like I just pinched her and then lay down and roll over on her back. People look at me like I just killed her. She makes me feel like such a B. and she knows this.

I taught my dog commands with hand signals because she seemed to learn them faster that way. Now, she gets SO CONFUSED when I sign! She doesn't understand what she is supposed to do!

I know! Poor Mika, when my husband & I are practicing our ASL, she goes nuts. (She doesn't do this when we are just talking.) Gets so confused. Starts barking and poking us with her nose, her eyes big as saucers! Like she has her "hands on her hips" and is demanding to know what the heck we are saying! She wants to be part of the conversation! :laugh2:

Hey Derek, is it still table scraps if it is direct from the table to pup or are scraps anything from the table area? You might be ok just fixing the pup a steak that way it would not be a "scrap" right?

I don't give my dog much when it comes to people food. Every now and then I'll give him a bit of apple or carrot or something healthy. Sometimes even a bit of chicken if it's plain. But for the most part, it's strictly dog food for him. And he always has to sit and watch me eat every time I eat, no matter what. But as long as he's not actively begging, I'm ok with him just sitting and watching me closely (I'm sure he hopes I'll drop something tasty on the floor for him).

They're all from table. I often get an order of Little Caesars pizza and share with my rottweiler. He finishes my dinner when I'm full. Yes, he does have dog food too.

Does he have preferences, pepperoni, sausage, or chicken? You wanted to teach him to sign. Start asking him what he wants for the night.

I'm not sure how to teach him signs for those words. I wish I knew. He does not seem to mind any one of them. He is picky when it comes to hard rawhides, but he is not picky when it comes to pizza flavors.

When I take Sable to Wal-mart she will wag her tail when I pick up a treat she likes. Hard rawhide no way, no on pig ears best left on the pig. Beggin Strips and chicken from Milos Kitchen and I am not sure if either one is real meat but they sure smell good. She do not really like pizza.
