The sixth Supporting Deaf People online conference will take place on
the 28th - 31st January 2009.
This years conference will have two themes: Deaf Education and Ethics
& Professionalism.
We are calling for presentations under these broad themes and would
particularly welcome presentations on any of the following:
Deaf Education:
- Community participation in Deaf Education
- Deaf perspectives/experiences of Deaf education
- Deaf visions of the future of Deaf Education
- Educational interpreting
- Inclusion/mainstreaming d/Deaf children
- Cochlea Implants
- Deaf education in developing countries
- Literacy
- Deafblind education
- Teaching English as a foreign language to d/Deaf children
- Language and thinking
- The effectiveness of different communication modes
- Adult deaf involvement in education of deaf children
- Teaching sign language to Deaf children in school (grammar, etc.)
- Sign language usage in the classroom
- Sign to voice interpreting in education
- The role of interpreters in introducing Deaf students to the world
beyond education
- How deaf children learn
- Future visions - how should deaf education work in 2050?
Ethics and Professionalism:
- Is it time to rethink our codes of ethics?
- Dilemmas faced by interpreters
- Interpreter training - future developments
- Deaf perspectives on interpreter ethics and professionalism
- Testing systems for interpreters
Other ideas for presentations are welcome so long as the fit broadly
into the above themes.
Registering an interest
If you would like to register an interest to be a presenter at the SDP
2009 conference, please submit the following by the 30th September 2008:
- A short biography
- A proposed title of the presentation
- The theme into which the presentation fits
- An abstract/summary of the proposed presentation
These details should be emailed to judithm@directlearn.co.uk
A free place will be offered to presenters as well as a honorarium.
CEUs are also available to presenters who are RID members.
Key dates
30th September 2008 - Closing date for registering an interest
10th October 2008 - Notification of acceptance/rejection of presentation
1st January 2009 - Deadline for submission of presentations
21st January 2009 - Conference opens for reading
28th January 2009 - Theme One opens
30th January 2009 - Theme Two opens
