Super gadget allows deaf blind people to 'hear' with skin - dnaindia.com

A gadget that converts sound to vibrations will help individuals who are deaf and blind or severely hearing impaired to perceive and recognize sounds with their skin, says its maker.

Called Monitor, the super device is being developed by engineering researcher Parivash Ranjbar, reports The Daily Express.

Ranjbar, an engineering researcher at Örebro University in Sweden, said: "Deaf blind people are used to getting information about their surroundings from vibration.

"Some people say they can tell which of their children is approaching from vibrations on the floor or they know when water starts to boil in a pot by the vibration it makes."

She added: "The purpose of the aid is to help people identify different sounds. They can also tell if somebody is talking to them but not what they say. However, one of my subjects was able to repeat exactly to me what I had said to my supervisor when I took a phone call. Monitor could make a real difference to people's lives.

"Deaf blind people say they feel fear because they are always surprised by events and cannot plan for them. They cannot hear somebody approaching until they are close enough to smell the person's perfume or to touch them and by that time it is too late to decide how to prepare."

Wow!. I never heard of this before. One of the subjects understood a phone call coversation? WOW!!! Where can I buy the Monitor?

Maybe I could combine the Monitor with the wristwatch (100 percent invisible hearing)

WHY are you so obessed with invisable hearing? Look at it this way......when people see your CI, they know you're hoh. it's an obvious visable clue that you're hoh. Without that visable clue they could think something else (ie that you're lying about being hoh or that you're a doofus or something like that) Your preoccupation with totally implantable invisible technology obviously indicates that you still have very deep seated issues with being hoh. You need to learn sign and get involved with deaf culture, and discover the positive side of being hoh. SO WHAT if people can see your CI? Bling it out....Be PROUD of it! With being so preoccupied with invisable technology, you're buying into hearing world attitudes that say you should be ashamed of being hoh. Be PROUD of it!
