KOBTV.com - Summit steers deaf toward employment goals

In New Mexico, nearly two-thirds of deaf and hard-of-hearing people are jobless or underemployed, according to the latest figures available from the Community Outreach Program for the Deaf in Albuquerque.

The summit begins Thursday and is designed to get people thinking about employment while they’re still in school.

The event is free and open to the public. It will be held at the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe.

Agencies providing services for deaf and hard-of-hearing youth and several employers will talk about the best ways to break into the world of work.

Other topics include federal aid, rights and responsibilities with interpreting services, technology and federal laws
