Suicide car bomb kills U.S. soldier in Iraq

At least 20 others wounded in Sunday attack

BAGHDAD - A suicide car bomb exploded near an American patrol base Sunday in northern Iraq, killing one soldier and wounding 20 other people, the U.S. military said.

Eighteen of the wounded were American soldiers and two were Iraqi contractors working at the base in Tamim province, according to a brief statement from the military.

Tamim has a mixed population of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, with the oil-rich city of Kirkuk as its capital.

Brig. Gen. Sarhat Qadir, a senior officer in the Kirkuk police department, said the car bomb targeted a U.S. patrol base in a mostly Sunni Arab residential area in Rashad, about 25 miles southwest of Kirkuk.

The suicide attacker rammed his vehicle into blast walls outside the gates of the U.S. base, Qadir said.

Earlier, the U.S. military issued a statement saying an American soldier died late Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb in eastern Baghdad.

The casualties' names were withheld until the families could be notified.

At least 4,094 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Very sad :(

4,094 since March 2003 is too many... :(

We should leave Iraq alone!!!! It would create more problem if we don't leave Iraq alone.

but it might be a bigger problem than now if we leave Iraq alone now. If we leave Iraq - they will have one of the bloodiest sectarian war (or civil war) in Middle East. If that happens - that means a destability in Middle East which means higher oil prices which means it may spill into other nations - probably Kuwait + Syria + Iran + Saudi Arabia.

Iraq with no central government, no central army, and no central infrastructure means its long-time enemies will take advantage of it like Iran and Syria. Israel might get involved as well. UN, US, and NATO will not be in position to defuse this situation and this could lead to mini-World War 3 in Middle East. tough situation... very tough...

4,094 dead soldiers and over a million dead innocents... indeed too many but it's worth the cost if it's to prevent mini-WW3 from happening.

4,094 soldiers died is no worse than Vietnam war and it was 58,000+ US soldiers died in Vietnam war.

It was too hassle at during Vietnam war because of ALOT of men had been drafted but nothing is happen now.

However, that's so sad story.

Well, 4,094 soliders died since March 2003 which is only 5 years, it may increase to more thousands to compare with US soliders died in Vietnam war for 30 years later. That's why I want troops back from Iraq war.

Unfortunlately yes, a lot of soliders during vietnam war time, escaped to live in Canada that's time they tried to draft them. The rumor spread out that they plan to re-introduce the draft for soliders because a lot of soliders refuses to go Iraq war. I hope the rumor is not true.

However, that's so sad story.

Well, why should Iraqi need US's help when they continue killed US soliders for? US Government are supposed to consider their own people and country to improve their healthcare than worry about Iraqi's since Iraqi have a new president..

This link explains better.

Informed Comment: 7 US Soldiers Killed; <br> Public Blames Iraq War for Economic Woes

To my opinion, it would not create a problem if we leave Iraq alone because Iraq did not attack America in first place. Why you think it would prevent from WWIII when Iraq did not attack America in first place? And no more Saddam... I can understand if Iraqi need Economy help but... oh well... it's no good to try to change Iraqi what they are because their culture is different as US. Just leave them and their culture alone.

Do not confuse Iraqis with insurgents and foreign terrorist groups. implementing universal Healthcare System in America is much more difficult than doing it in Germany. At least you do not have to worry about millions of illegal immigrants and a high diversified population with huge range of poverty to wealth. The Republicans viewed universal healthcare system as a form of socialism. Why is it our responsibility to pay for poor people? That's their reasoning. That's why it's called the rich and the poor.

I see but it's not about who attacked first. If we leave Iraq alone - how can Iraq functions without central army, infrastructure, and central government?

In other word.... throw guns at them and let them solve it? I thought you want no war? We are trying to contain the internal conflict from becoming a multi-national conflicts. Do you not understand that by leaving Iraq now while it has no means of enforcing its own citizens - Iraq will have a long civil war? That civil war will COULD turn into WWIII with Syria/Iran/Kuwait/Israel involved. Get it?
