Sudden hearing loss

Hi my name is Stewart and I just had both ears done for CI implants and get turned on 2 morrow ... I came down with meningitis nov 7th 07 and came out of acoma 100% deaf... they put me on the fast trac for the implants... 8 hr surgery and 1 night at the U of Minnesota ..... I was givin really no choice if I wanted 2 hear somthing at all HA's did nothing for my hearing ... this is a new world for me but I think if U can U should go thru with the CI surgery.... I am lucky I'm 30 but have fam. 2 fall back on I can't work or drive yet.. So have 2 live with my rents they have been great.... Don't be scared of the surgery I healed fast in about 3 weeks just the first week was hard 2 sleep cause they did them both at the same time.. I can't wait till 2 morrow at 1 pm it has been a long hard 6 months for me ..... Good luck and best wishes....

Thanks for the words of encouragement. When I get my hearing aids fixed and if they still work for me, I am sticking with them. CIs are waaaayyyyy down last on my list.

Best of luck to you. :)

I had a similar thing happen to me when I was 15 - Im profoundly deaf in left ear and at the time I had moderate to severe hearing loss in my right ear. One day I woke up and realized I could not hear at all! Appearently I dropped from moderate-severe to severe-profound loss in my right ear as well. I was for sure deaf. I could not hear the sound of my mom's voice when she was seated directly in front of me, I could no longer hear the TV. This was when I was first fitted with HAs. But they made me so dizzy and gave me headaches that I just stopped wearing them. Now Im a speech reader. I can hear environmental sounds like music if its turned up way way loud, but voices at normal volumes I cant hear hence the reason for you to face me when we are having a conversation.

Update!

Hey all,

My audiologist emailed me today and told me several things. First, I have an appointment with another audiologist at Sunnybrooke hospital in Toronto to have more comprehensive testing done, and to talk about the possibility of a CI. I haven't made any choices yet, I think my audiologist just wants to keep my options open.

She also ordered me a new hearing aid. I don't know if she ordered one or two, I will see her tomorrow and find out then. The new aid(s) will be Phonak Naida(s). I am really hoping that it/they will work. If I can get enough from it that I can successfully negotiate mainstream high school again, and use the phone I will be happy.

I should know some more tomorrow after my appointment. I am going to have the right aid turned down, it is making me feel dizzy.

:ty: for the words of encouragment everyone!
