Hey everyone,

I have a moderatly severe-severe loss in my right ear, and severe-profound in my left. About 2 hours ago I had a suddon loss of hearing in my left ear. I can't really hear anything in it anymore with or without my aid...I checked my HA is funtioning fine. The pressure feels fine, and there is no blood or pain or any other sign of infection or a perferated ear drum. There isn't a blockage, or wax build up...just a sudden loss of hearing. My tinnitis has changed in that ear too, it has gone from a high pitched consistant tone to a sound like a cricket....not to sure what's happening. It's 2:30 AM here and I am on the phone with our province wide free nursing advice line but I am on hold. Conveniently I have an appointment with my audi first thing in the AM....but until then, do any of you have any idea what might be happening?

I will keep you posted...

Thanks,

Jenny

I would go to the ER to get it checked out if you are willing to do that. Sometimes, a sudden hearing loss can be treated with steroids if you get to a doctor within a short space of time. Sometimes not. But it may be worth a try if you are anxious to do something sooner than waiting for your audie.

I went to my audiologist this morning and told her what was going on. She tested my hearing again to see that I have lost an additional 30db of my hearing. This now puts me in the profound range in both ears. I spent all day hospita hopping trying to find an ENT that could see me. Finally I gave up and went to an urgent care center. I was seen by a doctor there who got me an appointment to see and ENT on Monday. My audiologist wanted me to be seen by and ENT today or tomorrow at the latest and she called the ENT who I was supposed to see on Monday and talked them into seeing me today. I went to have the ENT tell me it was irreversable. He told me I should seriously consider a CI because HA's probably won't help me much anymore. Some how I am still able to use a phone when everything is turned up as high as it can go. Both my audiologist and I were amazed by that one. At the end of the day I went back to see my audiologist and we just talked for a while about options and she bumped up my right hearing aid by a lot. She is looking into all of my options for me. I am lucky to be blessed with a saint of an audiologist hahaha. She will do anything that she needs to for her patients...including staying an hour after closing on a Friday night hehe. Anyway not to sure what is going on right now, hopefully I will have answers soon!

You've suffered the loss in your better right ear? I thought from your first post that it was in the worst left ear.

I had the same thing happen as you've experienced just now and it's pretty stressful so take care of yourself and don't make any major decisions at this time. I'm glad you have such a great and caring audie though. It's funny that you have experienced this with only having had hearing aids for a month. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

I have no idea what could cause sudden hearing loss. Did you notice any sudden hearing deterioration prior using hearing aids? I hope you find answers. Take care.

Ooh that suck that you lost hearing suddenly after only a month of wearing hearing aid.
My own theory is I think your cochlea nerves been "sleeping" since you stopped wearing HA and then you wore it again maybe amplification was too much at once and it "shock" the nerve and they gave up and died off?
You're not only one. I used to have moderate almost mild 45-55 hearing loss in right ear and severe of 90-95 in left. And overnight it plunged into profound loss for both ear. Right now my right is 95-110 and left is 105-120 hearing loss.
No clue what happened it just decided to die out of blue.
But I was in extreme denial I took audiogram test twice but I assume that pure tone test was not working or they screw something up and hearng aid is broken and 3 years later May of 2007 I took it again for 3rd time to get new hearing aid and discovered I really do have profound hearing loss I was in complete shock and immediately processed with CI I tested hearing aid out Oticon sumo ds but it was painful, dizzy just horrible. Then I got CI and oh my god its sweetest sound ever lol that's just me. We have a lot in common go check my blog out to see my experience from day 1 we're very similar. Just an thought :)

I think it is possible. I mean, we know that listening to loud music constantly will damage your hearing. But, what about the environment? In my case the environment sounded a lot louder than music, so it possible that environmental sound can cause further damage to your hearing?

BTW SkullChick, I just saw your blog. I haven't read everything yet, but from what little I have read, it is interesting. :)

hey

My loss is not ver bad 40 dB in my right and 25 in my left but mine was sudden, it started with tinnitus and then my hearing started to go a bit...but thank goodness u have a good audi! i had to go thru 3 to find the right one! lol I live in ottawa, maybe we are close to each other. Hope you are doing ok and don't worry there are alot of ad'ers who have gone thru the same thing! we're here to talk to:D

I didn't think there had been more loss in my right ear at the time of the first post. My audi and I decided it had been progressive. We looked back over the last few weeks and I had been complaining about my speech discrim getting worse, and struggling more in school, and extra frustration. We are glad we tested me today! We both just thought the extra problems were just me adjusting to the HA's again.

I talked to my mom today and it turns out that this happened when I was younger. I would lose 10db for no reason suddenly and it wouldn't come back. It's apperently "normal" for me.

I wondered if it was tied to the HA's too but neither the audi or ENT thought so.

I didn't notice any recently...but like I said it apperently used to happen when i was younger.

I am not sure what happened, no one is. I am keeping my mind open to considering a CI. Not making any choices yet. This is a lot to take in, even though I am used to dealing with my hearing I never thought I would just end up with a profound loss when I was 18...I will check out your blog!

I agree, the environment is LOUD!

I used to live in Kingston, moved to Toronto is September though. So we are kind of close lol. I am doing okay thanks, the amazing audi has helped a lot!

Wow..after reading this thread, it is making me wonder if I am also losing some of my hearing (see my other thread I just created about broken hearing aid). *sighs* If I no longer can hear like I do (it is not much but it sastisfies me) I may have to seriously think of getting a CI even though I am not too crazy about the idea but I am not too crazy about the idea of living the rest of my life without sound at all. All I want is to hear environmental sounds ..dont care about the speech part..never had that so no biggie there.

Hope u get everything worked out! Keep us posted!

Yeah... sometimes you or other people just have no choice if you want to hear and CI's only option left (same for me) I had no choice but be in silence or get CI. Hearing aid was too painful and not safe for me to wear if I'm driving or operate any machine like sewing, etc.
I understand you're very afraid of surgery because of your bad experience but you had was local anesthensia right?

yea it was and it didnt work and then they proceeded with the surgery..I was screaming my head off.

Also, I am afraid of the possible side effects. To me, surgery is a major thing.

Yeah I understand I had bad reaction to valium/diazepam sedatives prior the anesthensia for other prodecure I had tachycardia reaction (irregular very fast pounding heartbeat, severe muscles spasms) so anesthesologist would ask million questions over and over again to be clear and put bracelet on to say "no this or that" for doc to see and put in custom made cocktail.

Side effects, yeah I know I wish they don't exists! But its there, life's about taking risk in my opinion. :)

I have too much to live for. That's why I am not sure if I want to take that risk with my life, ya know?

Yeah I know but just keep mind open in case if anything. My surgeon told me worst case scenario for CI surgery is partial facial parlysis and its very rare because of facial nerves monitor. *shrugs* of course you can wait till it get super less invasive and become "minor surgery" if you want, never too late if you want give it a shot. :) or just wait for something stronger than Oticon Sumo or whatever have similar strength of amplification maybe in future they'll makes Oticon Titan haha its totally all up to you.
