Hello everyone. I haven't been in this forum for some time not so it's almost like I'm new here again so I thought I'd jump right in and try y to post something useful to start out. I've been HOH all my life by my hearing decreased to deafness when I was about 20. I'll be 37 in a couple of weeks.

I remember how I loved watching movies in the theaters when I was a kid. Now days I'm sure I'm not alone when I sometimes feel left out of what modern technology has to offer hearing people. I'm not whining about it. It's just nerve racking from time to time. One of the things that bugged me was that hearing people have so many ways they can watch TV and movies on the internet but we deaf have to do a lot of searching to find one that is subtitled. I'll show you how I learned how to do that and it's all free. I know there are movie theaters that have closed captioned movies but they aren't all that common. The closest one to my home is about a 2 hour drive.

I learned a variety of ways to download and watch movies and TV shows from the internet. After a few friends asked me to show them how to do it I decided to write up some basic instructions. Rather then post all the information I just made it into a little PDF file. So if you want to know how to download and add subtitles to online movies you can check it out. Nothing in it will cost anything.

You can see the PDF file here:
Deaf Movies

I hope someone finds this helpful and i hope you enjoy finally being able to watch subtitles movies from your computer.

If any of you have any trouble with this please let me know. I'll help if I can.

Just that you know, AVI is not Apple Video. It's Audio Video Interleave.

I hit the "report post" button, but to the OP: you provided links for downloading movies for free, ie illegally. While adding your own subtiles to content you purchased fairly, either through DVD or online shops like Itunes or Amazon Unbox is well and great, stealing someone else's work isn't. It's a pretty crappy thing to do.

I agree . I'd like to add that the PDF file is crap. The first hyperlink is no longer a valid link (site is now a URL-squatter site)

a short while ago I began working on a method of watching the streaming video from Netflix with subtitles. the thread is here:
http://www.alldeaf.com/deaf-product...subtitles-netflix-watch-instantly-sortof.html
If I have a chance I plan to make a far more detailed how-to so that others can use what I've started without as much tweaking and experimenting. I'm getting closer to a usable solution but synchronization is still a big issue.

The PDF file was good. I didn't try the links, but it does give you a good outline to get your started. :)

Didn't realize any of the links were broken. But a simple search for the program mentioned would be easy to find them. I searched long and hard for a way to join Flash videos and most articles I found said "So far a free one does not exist". But I stumbled on the one called "Movica" and it works great. But anyway the link is now fixed. :)

Banjo - Sorry for my mistake. I just knew that AVI files usually open in "apple" Quicktime player. But they can open in Windows Media Player if you have the right codec. Thanks for the correction.

Sorry if I offended anyone. I didn't plan to and I'm not asking for anything. As I said before. I don't recommend anyone to don it illegally. I said there are legal ways to do it. You can even have home movies you made yourself subtitled with this information. But hearing people have that choice too. Just trying to be helpful.

Problem

If any of you have any trouble with this please let me know. I'll help if I can.

I am having a problem now. I followed everything you've said until Page 4. I went to Movica and opened the folder to select the file. The problem was that it doesn't show anything in the folder even though I got the files dowloaded from todou.com. How do I get the files to be recognized? Does it have anything to do with .Net Framework?

I'm sorry I'm not quite sure what the exact problem is.

Let me try and walk you through it and see if you can spot what might be wrong from that.

You've downloaded the movie. Most likely the movie has been split into sections. Let's assume it was split into 4 sections.

Create a folder on your desk top and put all 4 sections of the movie into that folder. It might be helpful to name them in order. For example (Part1), (Part2), (Part3) and (Part 4).

Open movica and click the "join" tab.

Click the image of a folder (Select file to join).

In the box that opens open the folder the video files are in and click (part1). All 4 parts of that movie should load into the Movica screen.

Make sure they are in order (IE: The top file on the list is part1, next part2 and so forth).

Click the image of the floppy disk on the top left. (join files)

A box will appear after a few seconds. Type in what you want to call the finished file of the joined videos. For example if the movie you can that's broken into 4 parts is star wars. Then type in "starwars".

That's it. The program will now join the parts together and create a file called "Starwars.flv" that is all the parts joined together.

Sometimes after clicking the "join" button a dialog box will appear telling you that something on the video parts are set right and asks if you want it to fix it. If this box appears just click "yes" and it'll fix what needs to be fixed then join them.

I hope this helps. If now feel free to PM me.

yes...there

I'm sorry I'm not quite sure what the exact problem is.

Now that's where the problem is. It won't show the files when I open up the folder. The files are all invisible even though they appear through other ways (such as opening My Computer and so on).

Were you able to get it working? If not there is another way to go. Instead of joining the video sections together you can use the subtitle Time Adjuster program and slice the subtitles files into matching sections. This will take more work but it can be done.
