So you want to be able to watch videos with subtitles on any player that plays videos huh? Perhaps you have a video you downloaded and want to watch it on your computer or mobile phone. Here's how it can be done.

First of all you need the video file and the subtitles file. Subtitles can be downloaded from the internet and they are usually either .srt files or .sub files (.srt being most common).

Do a search for "download subtitles" or "Download srt" and you'll find many sites that offer them. For example a good one for movies is opensubtitles.com. For TV shows try TVsubtitles.net. Don't limit yourselves to these sites alone though. If they don't have what you are looking for then search around.

Now I'll assume you've found the video you want and the matching subtitles.

Another program you'll find useful is a Subtitles Time adjuster. This is a small and free program that allows you to adjust the timing of the subtitles to match that of the video. It also allows you to convert one type of subtitles for another. For example .sub files can be turned into .srt files. It'll also allow you to cut and join subtitle files (Sometimes they come in parts and this program will allow you to join them together).

Now, mobile devices aren't likely to support subtitles. Maybe there are some that do but I've never seen one. In either case what I'm about to show you will allow you to watch them on a mobile device even if it doesn't support subtitles. How we accomplish this is to do something called muxing. This means the subtitles will be permanently embedded into the video. The subtitles can't be turned on or off. They are just simply a part of the video.

To do this I use a very small and simple program called AviSub. Click here to get it.

Basically how this works is you open the program. Add the AVI video file, Add the SRT subtitles file. And the program will embed the subtitles into it.

Now we have a problem with video format. The above avisub progrm only supports AVI files. There are other programs that will work with other formats but the above avisub is free.

So if your video isn't an AVI video. No problem. Just convert your video to AVI before you add the subtitles to it.

Click here to find the best free video converter I've found. It's a nice program and will convert just about all video formats (flv, avi, divx, xvid, mpeg4, ipod, iphone, psp, 3GP, 3G2, AVI, DIVX, XVID, TS, DVD, VCD, MPEG, MPEG2, MP3, WAV, amr, m4a, mp4, vob, mov, h264, h263, wmv, wma).

So you can use the above program to convert the file to AVI if needed. Then run it through the AviSub program to embed the subtitles into it. It'll create a new video file with the subtitles embedded or muxed into it. Now you can go back to the quick media converter program and convert it to what ever format your player plays. For example if you want to watch it on your iPhone then convert it to iPhone format. IF you want to watch it on a windows medi player then convert it to WMV. What ever format you want it can be converted to.

IMPORTANT:
Not every subtitles will match the video file you have for they where all made by people and they may have made them for a different version of that video. Use the above time adjuster to adjust the timing as best you can. But sometimes a subtitles file is so off from the video you are using it might not be possible to adjust it. If this happens then simply search for anotehr version of the subtitles file.

One more thing. This free video player called Total Video player will play just about all video formats and it also allows you to include subtitles. So you cna use it to test the timing with your video to make sure it matches before using the Avisub program to embed the subtitles into the video.

I hope someone finds this useful All the programs I linked to are free.
