The Falcon Flyer - Briar Woods High School - Students Experience a Day of Silence to Honor Deaf Awareness Month
Nicole Vohrer’s first block American Sign Language 2 class goes by this quote "Deaf people can do everything that hearing people can do except hear."
"You may not know that it is Deaf Awareness Month and we as a class take this very seriously," said Vohrer.
The class commemorated Deaf Awareness Month by participating in a day of silence in respect for the deaf community. Students got permission from their teachers to make sure their silence in class would not interfere with what each teacher’s lesson.
For that day they were living the life of a deaf student.
There were mixed feelings about this activity.
"It will be too hard to go a day without speaking just because I take so many different languages on that day which causes for speaking," stated senior Emily Knox.
Other students, like sophomore Reid Scholz, said, "This is one of the best experiences of my life, I am so excited."
This was not only hard for the students but for the teachers as well. For example, this caused some students to have someone else take notes for them because they couldn’t hear due to the ear buds, which they used to simulate deafness.
Statistics and general math teacher Dee Muesse says "It was very distracting to see the student passing notes just to figure out what I was saying in the front, but I know it was for a good cause."
Other teachers who didn’t mind this activity. For example Eugene Legg he was all for it if he could he would have joined them in that day of silence.
The students in that ASL 2 class commented that they didn't mean to cause trouble but they felt that they should help put the deaf community out there because not many people know about it.
"The only thing that we want to do is to inform people that there is nothing wrong with deaf people, the only thing that is different about them is that they can’t hear," said, senior Ashley Adams.
