(May 3, 2005) — Student graces pages of 'People'

A 21-year-old college student from Mendon is featured in this week's People magazine. Not too shabby, being in the magazine's "50 Most Beautiful" issue, graced by cover girl Julia Roberts. Tony Madalena, 21, a student at Rochester Institute of Technology's National Technical Institute for the Deaf, isn't quite to the stage of national stardom, however. He is featured as one of 10 "Beauties on your Block" in the May 9 edition, which was available locally on Friday.

Hundreds entered the magazine's call for the most beautiful person inside and out. He was nominated by his sister, Carrie, 26, of Florida.

"He's somebody you can always turn to. He's a good-natured kid and he will always be there for you," said his mother, Karen Madalena.

"I didn't really tell any of my friends that I am in the magazine, but they found out on their own and congratulated me," Tony said Monday.

Tony, who his mother said is generally shy and avoids the limelight, graduated from Rochester School for the Deaf in 2002 and plans to major in mechanical engineering at RIT.
