Streetcars will soon be making a comeback in the District of Columbia. The last streetcar ran in 1962. Today's Examiner reports that DC transportation officials expect to have them rolling again by early next year.

The coordinator of the Great Streets Project for DC-DOT says the city is expected to request bids this summer to install tracks along H Street and Benning Road. The three-and-a-half-mile stretch of road already is being rebuilt. The tracks would run from near Union Station to the Minnesota Avenue Metro station.

D-DOT director Dan Tangherlini says the streetcars will be "clean and quiet" and should fit nicely with the neighborhood's character.

It's already a busy corridor - as many as 20,000 people use two Metrobus lines along the route each weekday.

Great Streets Project coordinator Karina Ricks says the District also is working to expand the project to Capitol Hill.

Well, I'll be darned! I was four when they last ran (formerly a long time resident of DC Area) and that would be nice to see again. I remember the tracks all over the place before they removed them and hearing everybody older than I talk about 'em.

Hopefully they make the runs where it makes most sense and is benefitful to everybody.
