State to run RI School for Deaf | turnto10.com

The Board of Regents for Elementary and Second Education on Thursday voted unanimously for the state to temporarily take over the Rhode Island School for the Deaf.

As a result of the vote, the school’s board of trustees will no longer run the school and the director of the school will report directly to the Board of Regents.

NBC 10’s Bill Rappleye reported that the state will run the school until June.

The director of the trustees said he was disappointed in the vote but that he would go along with it.

State Education Commissioner Deborah Gist said the move was for the good of the students.

“We knew we needed to take a step back, regroup, look at rules and responsibilities, clarify rules and responsibilities and look at the bigger picture of services for students who are deaf and hard of hearing,“ Gist said. “We need to work with teachers and parents in the broader community to figure how we can do a better job of providing those services, but at the same time making sure that academically we’re focused on the performance of the students at the school.“

The school has been plagued by unstable leadership and has some of the lowest test scores in the state.

According to the school’s Web site the school has about 160 students.
