State employees union opposing Michigan School for the Deaf sale | MLive.com

A state employees union is calling a proposed sale of Flint's Michigan School for the Deaf campus from the state to a private developer a "murky deal," comparing it to the deal for a new State Police headquarters that was dogged by controversy.

In a news release posted on their website, the Michigan State Employees Association said going forward with the deal to sell the state-owned Miller Road property for $1.3 million to private investor Lurvey White Ventures would result in expensive construction and job loss.

According to the bill, the developer would build a new school and lease it to the state for a base rent of no more than $2,060,000.

Lurvey White Ventures, headed by Flint developer Ridgway White, would renovate the existing buildings and build a new school for the MSD.

White has said plans include renovating the historic Fay Hall for Powers Catholic High School, a plan Powers officials first confirmed they are interested in in recent weeks.

MSEA officials expect legislators to act on the bill late today or in the early hours tomorrow, as lawmakers finish up their lame duck session.
