State approves changes to schools for deaf, blind

TOPEKA | The Kansas State Board of Education has approved the reorganization of state schools for the deaf and blind.

The changes at the Kansas State School for the Deaf in Olathe and the Kansas State School for the Blind in Kansas City, Kan., is expected to save the state about $242,000 during the first year.

Madeline Burkindine, superintendent of the school for the blind, will oversee both schools. Bob Maile, superintendent of school for the deaf, had already announced his retirement. An assistant superintendent will be hired to help Burkindine.
