"Spidey 3" Swinging Into Action

Oh, what tangled webs they weave, when they practice to achieve--at the box office.

Spider-Man 2 isn't even finished, but Sony is so confident the would-be blockbuster will be a blockbuster that the studio has given the green light to a third big-screen adventure featuring Marvel's signature superhero.

In a conference call with reporters Tuesday, Marvel Studios Chairman and CEO Avi Arad confirmed that "Spider-Man 3 is in development" and that the sequel will likely swing into theaters by 2007, though it's possible the movie could arrive earlier.

"The best case scenario I can tell you [is] 2006. It is a big movie, and we would rather play it safe and talk about 2007 at this point," Arad said.

A rep for Sony confirmed on Wednesday that the two studios have agreed to move forward on a new Spider-Man, but declined to elaborate further.

Despite published reports saying otherwise, there's no official word yet whether director Sam Raimi will be back behind the cameras, but Tobey Maguire will likely suit up again as our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, having previously signed to do two sequels.

Given the record-setting success of the first Spider-Man flick--it grossed $115 million in its first three days alone on its way to $800 million worldwide in 2002--and the expected boffo business for this summer's sequel, the odds favor Raimi returning for a third go-round.

Spider-Man 2, formerly titled The Amazing Spider-Man, is due to open wide on July 2.

The original Spider-Man was written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park) and its follow-up by a committee of writing talent, including Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist (and avowed comic fiend) Michael Chabon. No word yet on whom Sony will recruit to pen the next installment or on which villains Spidey will tackle.

Last time out Peter Parker's arachnid-loving alter ego smacked down Willem Dafoe (news)'s Green Goblin; in this summer's sequel he's up against Alfred Molina (news)'s multi-tentacled Dr. Octopus.

For Spider-Man 3 to make it into theaters by 2006, Sony will need to figure out dates to accommodate Maguire & Co.'s busy schedules.

When it came time to do Spider-Man 2, Maguire's participation seemed in doubt due to a bad back sustained while shooting Seabiscuit and amid reports the actor wasn't happy with his paycheck. There were even reports Sony was ready to replace him with Jake Gyllenhaal (news), but the two sides eventually worked things out.

The budget could also be a concern. It will take lots of money to bring back the talent for Spider-Man 3 and pay for the pricey F/X--Spider-Man 2's final cost was reportedly around $200 million, a sizable increase over the original's film's $120 million budget.

But we're guessing the money and timing issues will be worked out. And that should make Spidey fans' senses tingle big time.

I hope Toby still acting. I know he has a back problem.

I'm wondering who villian....Hobgoblin, Electro, Mysterio,Scorpion or Lizard.

OF COURSE...I hope Lizard!!!!

I seriously hope my all time favorite villain, VENOM would make an outrageous and thrilling appearance in Spider-Man 3! he da man!

I do recall that Stan Lee mentioned about pick three or four old villains first then I assume that maybe 5th for Venom. Venom is not old villian.

:werd: The best villian I've ever read was Venom. Who knows, if the movie does well... they just might give Venom his own movie! In the comic books, Spiderman fights Rhinoman. In the process, a truck is damaged (or turned over?). The man driving that truck is Eddie Brock, who gets fired for this. He's now pissed off at Spiderman. Later, Spiderman gets this alien symbiote attached to him. He learns to like it, until he eventually gets tired of it for some reason. He loses it and it falls in the hands of Eddie Brock. Eddie realizes it potential and becomes Venom. Yes, he's bad... but he's also good. He's like a mix between good and evil at the same time. If this actually follows through, we might see Spiderman with this outfit for a bit before it falls in Eddie Brock's hands! There's another character I would really like to see. That would be Carnage. Eddie is sent to jail and is cellmates with a serial killer, Cletus Kasady. They both break out of prison, and in the process... part of the alien symbiote is left behind and it merges with Cletus. The comic series involving Carnage was very wild!

Yeah I heard rumors that Marvel proably would make afew Spider-Man spin off of Venom into movies, which in fact, that I do have over 20 issues of Venom comics, as he did have his own series from 1992 to 1998. Now, about last year I saw newer Venom series but didn't think it was too good as the previous issues in the past were.

I like Venom more than carnage because he's....Venom! of course, he isn't always a bad guy, but usually is the bad guy to one person he hates the most in the whole world...spider-man. While you say that Eddie Brock got fired for the truck thingy, I thought he was REALLY fired because of false statements about the man who was considered the "sin eater" but later on Spider-Man somehow found the REAL sin-eater so I thought that's when Eddie got fired for false statements and grew to hate spider-man for losing his job, etc... Eddie and the alien made quite an interesting couple...they both hate spider-man and wanted to kill him for sure. Carnage is an interesting villain too but he's just a physco serial killer with the alien attrached to him and likes to kill people for no reason...but I like Venom better because he HAVE a reason...the reason to kill spider-man for losing his job and other stuff like that. I just like him the best and will always be my favorite ever since. Venom versus Carnage was one of the most interesting battles I've ever seen in pervious spider-man comics years ago (Carnage: Maxium red, I think?)

lol I just wonder who'll play as Eddie Brock, since he is a body builder and has a crew cut..etc Arnold Schwarzegger proably wouldn't do the trick...they proably would need someone else who is younger than 55 yrs old to do the role as Venom lol

They've already mentioned Dr. Connors in the first movie. So I was hoping Lizard would be in the second movie, but if he's not in the third I will be upset.
If they were to put Electro in a movie, they would have to change his crazy costume, so I'm hoping they would use shocker instead. Vulture is another character I would not like to see. I also don't like Green Goblin, so I'm hoping they don't bring him back.
I would like to see Spidey go up against a female. Someone like Black Cat or Silver Sable.
I'm not a big fan of aliens being in the movie, which is why I was disapointed with the ending of X-Men 2. I would prefer if they could change the plot so that Venom or Carnage were genetically created.
Cross overs and Cameos have potential. Maybe like Cloak and Dagger showing up in a movie, or having Spidey face off against the Punisher, or Spidey come up against the X-Men, with a Spidey vs. Wolverine scene.

it's very rare that movies would be made with characters teaming up or battling against other characters of a different comic book...but sure, it would be VERY interesting to see Spider-Man teamin up with X-men perhas in Spider-Man 3 or X3...who knows? But I doubt it'll happen anyway...

I heard rumors that Warner Bros. is producing another superhero movie with Superman and Batman as teams to battle something strange in Gotham City or whatever...who knows? I havent heard anything new ever since

Spider-man, Hulk, Punisher, X-Men and Dare Devil are all Marvel, I'm sure Stan Lee would be pleased to see them team up or battle it out. And Mr. Lee seems to have no problem jumping into his movies. I'm just hoping this outbreak of Marvel movies will end, or at least they will do something decent. I would hate to see an Avengers movie. However, Ghostrider would be cool.
After the last Batman movie, I don't think I could handle anymore. I've never liked DC anyways.
Spawn was an "ok" attempt at an Image title. They should make "The Tenth" movie. Image has an interesting array of characters to choose from that would make good movies.

Yeah I know such popular characters like Spider-man and X-men are all related to Marvel Enterprise, Inc but what about the STUDIOS? they get their copyrights statements into making a live action movie...you see, there will be a movie of aliens versus Predator coming this summer and it's owned by 20th century Fox...Aliens was presented by 20th century Fox, as well did predator. So, DareDevil and X-men were presented and owned by 20th century Fox, so maybe DareDevil would meet the X-men in X3 lol...kidding but I dunno much about laws over movies but Stan Lee made those comics so maybe he does have the right to put Spider-Man from Sony Pictures to into the movie with X-men from 20th century Fox...and proably would be presented by Universal studios...lol heck, it's just an example but I still dont think it'll happen anyway

Yeah I heard that Marvel is already working with the studio (dont know the name) on "Ghost Rider" and i think it might come this halloween but I'm not literally sure yet.
I have afew comics of this series and I definetly love it.

heh "Avengers" eh? it would proably come out as gay as "mystery men" (which sucked SO much ass bleh) You know there was already an Captain America movie, proably in the late 1980s or early 1990s and they might do the re-make, or a sequel of the movie. and "The Hulk" which was released last summer was a major disapointment. I just didnt think it followed the comics too well. so yeah "Batman and Robin" has got to be the gayest superhero movie ever made...geez it was so embrassassing I just wanna bite the director's head off! (Batman's not superhero, so why keep callin' him that anyway?)

Well I'm definetly excited for "The Punisher" and "Spider-Man 2" coming this summer...and I think they'll be worth the fun over the whole summer. ;)

How about Howie Long? You see him on those Radio Shack commercials with Terri Hatcher.

oh yeah! he does look alot like that Eddie Brock character! lol he did appear in afew movies...like "1,000 from gelimore"? (forgot the exact name) eh anyway I think he's a very good actor and if they choose him to be Eddie Brock/Venom, then the movie'll kick ass because of him

:werd: He's got that buzzcut as well. Heh! It would be interesting to see him with an evil side.
