WLBT 3 - Jackson, MS: Speech School Turns 50

The Magnolia Speech School celebrated a special day Saturday. The school recently turned 50 years old, and the founder of the school is also celebrating her 90th birthday.

Mrs. Elizabeth Matthews started the school on September 3 rd , 1956, after a group of parents heard about her experience as a hearing impaired teacher and parent of a deaf child. They asked her to open a school, and she did in her west Jackson home. Magnolia Speech School is the only auditory, oral school in the state that teaches hearing-impaired children who are born deaf to learn to listen, speak, and understand.

"Ms. Matthews brought this gift to Mississippi, and we feel that it is our duty and our pledge to continue this school for all the hearing-impaired, language-disordered children in the state," said Monica Daniels, assistant and development director.

Former students and faculty helped celebrate the significant day with a catfish fry, live blues music, and a special program for Ms. Matthews.

glad to hear that the program are still used to this day.. :applause: for Mrs. Matthews! :)
