Special home wanted for deaf puppy and its mother | News | Pet Product Marketing

Wood Green Animal Shelters is appealing for a very special home for a deaf puppy and her mother, who is also deaf.

Ellie, a Jack Russell, was brought into the Godmanchester Shelter while still pregnant, and later gave birth to six puppies in a foster home.

Following testing it has been found that two of the puppies have normal hearing, three are deaf in one ear, and little Ellie Junior is totally deaf, like her mother.

Both Ellie and Ellie Junior will need very special and experienced homes, with people who have the time and understanding to help them cope with the world around them. The puppies are now five weeks old and doing well in their foster home, where they will stay until they are ready to go to new homes in around two weeks’ time.

Sue Ketland, Behaviour and Training Consultant for Wood Green Animal Shelters, said: “Ellie is a loving affectionate lap dog, you can’t help but fall in love with her. When you first meet her it’s hard to believe that she is completely deaf.

"She is a fantastic mother to her six puppies but she can’t be there for them forever, therefore we felt that we should be responsible and have their hearing tested so that their potential new owners could make an informed decision when deciding whether or not to have one.

"The tests were done at the Animal Health Trust and revealed that two of the pups can hear normally, three are deaf in one ear, and one is deaf in both ears.

Ellie and her pups are safe and sound in the home of one of our ‘doggy midwives’. They will stay there until homes have been found for all the pups and Ellie too. We are looking for people who understand that these pups will need dedicated owners who will go the extra mile to ensure that they all go on to lead as normal lives as possible.”

Advice and full support will be provided by Wood Green Animal Shelters.

Anyone interested in offering a home to either Ellie or one of her pups should contact 0844 248 8181.
