Special Easter Egg Hunt for Deaf Children

A special easter egg hunt and party was held Thursday morning for more than 50 deaf children in Yakima.

"I love finding the eggs and I found nine eggs," James Sauer said through a translater.

Laughter and smiles filled the yard of the host's home off of Yakima Avenue Thursday morning. For James, it's a chance to enjoy the holiday.

"I have fun with my friends from school, my best friends name is Cody and he came today," he signed with his hands.

Many of the kids at the event are either hard of hearing or deaf, but today that doesn't matter. They're too busy enjoying the easter egg hunt, followed up with face-painting and cookies. There were even rabbits for the children to pet. James' mom, who is also deaf, says it's a chance for kids to meet new friends.

Terri Sauer said, "it's important to me because it helps all the deaf kids from all over the valley socialize and get to know each other and it's a real special moment for them."

Nancy Frame is some of the kids speech teacher and hosts the event with the Yakima Valley Hearing and Speech Center, and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority alumni. She says students take the day off from school and come to the hunt for candy all the way from Grandview and Royal City.

"They so look forward to it. Every time they see me they say, 'eggs, eggs, when are we going to look for eggs.' Even in July they'll ask me," she said.

Ivan Alfaro said, "finding all the eggs is really exciting."

Alfaro is now a student at YVCC, but has come here since he was a toddler. Now, he volunteers at the easter egg hunt, and say it's a day he and kids like James Sauer will never forget.

Alfaro said, "since I grew up, I've seen Nancy since I was little and remember always."

Teachers use the experience as an educational tool before and after the hunt. Kids will spend Friday writing thank you notes will new vocabulary they learned today like "easter rabbit" and "eggs."
