Southern California theaters receive new grant money | Culture Monster | Los Angeles Times

Every dollar counts. Two Southern California theaters are among the recipients of new grant money handed out by Theatre Communications Group that are intended to foster leadership development and new audiences.

South Coast Repertory is expected to receive an award of $80,000 to support an 18-month mentorship between the company's outgoing co-artistic director Martin Benson and Oanh Nguyen, the head of the Chance Theater, who will be taking on the newly created position of SCR's producing associate. Both theater companies are located in Orange County.

Deaf West Theatre in North Hollywood will receive a matching grant that will go toward new captioning technology to enhance service to deaf audiences and improve interactivity with patrons through the Internet. TCG didn't specify how much money the company will receive, but the grant could be as high as $65,000.

The grant money comes from a program that is co-organized by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Theatre Communications Group.

Other notable recipients of leadership grants include Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the McCarter Theatre Center, the Sundance Institute Theatre Program and the Wooster Group.
