Hey Ad'ers

I just got a letter from Social security say I owe $18,700! I went :-o and wondered why????? It says that I'm no longer disabled, why did they approve me for social security disablity in the first place in 2001???? They KNEW I work part time and I don't earn more than $800 a month. Why is social security pLaYing GAMES with me. I am so mad!!!!!! I feel like I want to choke them! I don't know what to do! I don't trust the waiving thing and appeal, I want to get a lawyer related to social security. I can't afford that amount! *growls*

Please no debating, I only want good advice. Thanks!

Looks like the only thing you can do is take them to court. It looks like it was their mistake. Have you called them and asked them about it and tried to get it straightened out?

^^The letter says they looked thru the details carefully, so why would they make a mistake? They could get fired for that kind of mistake. It doesn't make any apperant sense.

Have you called them though and asked them about it? I'm just saying if it did happen to be a mistake, you should not be held responsible for that, and for them to drop a bill like that is just ridiculous.

^^ok good idea, yeah I will call them on Monday to check up with them about that. Hope it won't be a struggle. :)

:deal: <--- Always read the fine print carefuly sequoias! ALWAYS! Dont sign NOTHING!! Until you understand what the fine print says and ask questions.

$850 a month is NOT the only number they looked at. They DO look at how many hours you have work in each week! If you work more than 20 hours a week, then they view you as abled bodied.
If you did work more than 20 hours a week sometimes, then you have problem. BUT you can always ask for trial or something I forgot what to call it. I know I will do it again. sigh.

I'm sorry, sequoias, that happens to you. If you don't want to deal with appeal on your own, you can do it with a lawyer. Show the lawyer everything including that appeal instructions. Don't give up and I know you will win. Good luck :thumb:

I would do as these ADers have suggested, Sequoias. It sounds like it is their mistake. If for some reason they are unmoving, you may also want to consider contacting a disability advocate. If they get stinky about it, you may need legal advice to help you deal with them.

Hang in there, Sequoias, and good luck! I hope you get this crap straightened out soon! :)

Seq,

it happened to me when i used to work 2 jobs that time, i did told SS agency that i got 2 jobs and i never get any letters from them so i thought things go straight out as well til 3 or 4 years later on , i got a letter from SS agency .. iw as like WTF .. i got pissed off and walked in SS agency and SIGN on WAIVE PAPER cause they hvaent told me abt it .. that's their fault , i got proof that i told them that i did reminding them abt 2 jobs, etc.. so they sent my waive paper to Maryland where SS agency *big co.* at .. so i got letter and told me dont worry to pay for it .. so things gone! *whew*

I don't agree with you on much, but on this, I do. However, the problem isn't so much signing a document before you read everything. It's really knowing what the requirements are for SSI/SSDI eligibilty, and being able to gracefully walk the tightrope, so that you don't fall to the ground breaking your neck, so to speak! Unfortunately, a lot of people get caught in situations like Sequoias described.

Alot of people!

Thanks everyone for the advices! I will take care of that on Monday, I will walk in SSA office and talk to them about that. It is SSDI, I believe since lot of deaf applied for it and work part time with that income. I only work less than 20 hours a week for 2 and half years, and worked at Lowes before my current job for 20 to 25 hours a week for only 10 months.

HEY seqouias, look in your local phone book, under lagai aide w/your small income you should qualify fo free lawyer. Second, the best thing is to definately call them(SS) and then next call legal aid. they will see you asap. They will take all info on phone and then take all your paperwork you have, including the letter you just got. Had same prob. because my hubby who is also on S S DIABILITY like me works 15 hrs a wk, at 7.50 a hr. doing dishwashing at local rest. I got the help from them w/leagal aide lawyer. After 2 phone calls and 5 letters from my lawyer, the rseponse was sorry, it was a clerical errror caused by a new caseworker who inadvertently wrote wrong info for our income. Go figure, the SS office isn't as smart when it comes to training employees!!! Any way all this was taking care of in a few wks. Good luck to you.

Hey sequoias , when u go to ss office make sure u bring your paycheck sub so they can see how many hrs you work
