Smoking Bans Cause Obesity

Public smoking ban do not solve anything.

If they set the law for public smoking ban because of health reasons but what about junk fast resturant/junk foods then? It makes no sense to me...

I was being taught at Spa resort that it's no excuse to blame on quit smoking to cause obesity but yourself because you know what kind of foods are health or not. Why you choose to eat wrong foods then? Blame yourself, not blame quit smoking or public smoking bans.

It makes sense why smoking ban causes obesitity.

When one can't smoke, they seek other alternatives to replace the smoking habit. Plus when your senses re-grow and "re-discovers" the taste of food again, we are more likely to put on the weight as everything tastes delicious again.

Granted it is a personal choice if one wants to smoke but they should'nt force others to put up with their habit.

Yupp true, when a smoker cannot smoke, the smoker will be more hungry at the same time craving for the cigarette. That is the cause me as the heaviest baby in the city of Portland in my birth year at 11 lbs 20 oz, because my mom can't smoke during pregnancy so she was a very hungry mother during I was in her stomach.

It's no excuse to blame quit smoking or smoking ban causes obesitity but yourself!!!! because you know what kind of foods are health or not. YOU, not smoking itself. :) It's YOUR personal choice...

Well, the true is that when a smoker cannot smoke the cigarette for awhile, the smoker will become more hungry, and that was cause me as the heaviest baby in the city of Portland at my birth year at 11 lbs 20 oz because my mom can't smoke during I was in her stomach so she was very hungry cause me heavy.

Public smoking ban do not solve anything.

Agree, and what's more, they don't allow smoking inside, but allow drinking in the public then allow them driving drunk....

So, people have to ask themselves why did you smoke in the first place?

Stress? Friends do it? Help the weight lot? Calm your nerves? Peer pressures? Cuz it look cool? so many of those sound pretty much an excuses to smoke. Once you smoke it become a addiction you can't stop. It like the same thing with pots and drugs. Smoking contains like over 6,000 chemicals in it and that dangerous to person's health.

I am sorry, I have to disagree with you on this one... Those are the reason why people want to smoke. Especially teenager, they start to smoke because they thought it was cool, it was the truth. Also one of my mom's friend who was a smoker, she told my mom that she doesn't want to quit smoking because she was scare of gaining weight, that is famous reason among the female smokers.

Wanna ask me why I smoke? Here's my answer, a very honestly answer.

I enjoy smoking. I enjoy to smoke after the dinner, to smoke during drinking the coffee, there is MANY reason why people smoke, not only the addiction. If the addiction was the reason, then they won't be happy smoking the cigarette, it's like they will fighting with the cigarette while I see fewer smoker are like that except for those smoker who was trying to quit.

Cigarette smoking is the most preventable cause of illness and death in the United States. A large number of Americans smoke cigarettes, and each year more than one million children and adults start smoking cigarettes. Many people die every year from illnesses caused by smoking. People who smoke die earlier than those who do not smoke. The risk of disease increases if you smoke a lot, inhale deeply, or have smoked many years.

Of course, I knew that... People do die, we die.. We can't blame that..

I tell you why smoking is bad for people so if u are smoker then you should be aware why it bad for you. Here is why is bad for you, Cigarettes are filled with poison that goes into the lungs when you inhale. Coughing, dizziness, and burning of the eyes, nose, and throat are early signs that smoking is harming you. Smoking increases your health risks if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high blood cholesterol. The long-term problems of smoking cigarettes are the following:

Being honestly, I already know and heard of that MILLLLLLLION of times.

Cancer: Smoking increases your chances of getting cancer. Cigarette smoking may play a role in developing many kinds of cancer. Lung cancer is the most common kind of cancer caused by smoking. A smoker is at greater risk of getting cancer of the lips, mouth, throat, or voice box. Smokers also have a higher risk of getting esophagus, stomach, kidney, pancreas, cervix, bladder, and skin cancer.

Stomach, kidney, panceras, cervix, bladder, and skin cancer? I thought the smoke only goes from mouth to lung, not all the way to bladder? I believe this is a big lie... No offense..

Heart and blood vessel disease:

If you already have heart or blood vessel problems and smoke, you are at even greater risk of having continued or worse health problems. The nicotine in the tobacco causes an increase in your heart rate and blood pressure. The arteries (blood vessels) in your arms and legs tighten and narrow because of the nicotine in cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke increases blood clotting, and may damage the lining of your heart's arteries and other blood vessels.

Carbon monoxide is a harmful gas that gets into the blood and decreases oxygen going to the heart and the body. Cigarette smoke contains this gas. Hardening of the arteries happens more often in smokers than in nonsmokers. This may make it more likely for you to have a stroke (blood clot in your brain). The more cigarettes you smoke, the greater your risk of a heart attack.

Lung disease:

The younger you are when you start smoking, the greater your risk of getting lung diseases. Many smokers have a cough which is caused by the chemicals in smoke. These chemicals harm the cilia (tiny hairs) that line the lungs and help remove dirt and waste products. Depending upon how much you smoke, your lungs become gray and "dirty" (they look like charcoal). Healthy lungs are pink.

Chronic bronchitis is a serious lung infection which is often caused by smoking. Emphysema is a long-term lung disease that may be caused by smoking cigarettes. Cigarette smoking also makes asthma worse. You are at a higher risk of getting colds, pneumonia, and other lung infections if you smoke.

Heard that milllllllion of times...

Gastrointestinal disease: Cigarette smoking increases the amount of acid that is made by your stomach, and may cause a peptic ulcer. A peptic ulcer is an open sore in the stomach or duodenum (part of the intestine). You may also get gastroesophageal reflux from smoking. This is when you have a backflow of stomach acid into your esophagus (food tube).

Sorry I think that's a lie because the thingy inside the smoke only go to lung, not to the stomach. So the chemicals goes in the lung, not the stomach.

Other problems: The following are other problems that smoking may cause:

Bad breath.

LOL.... So does the garlic!

Bad smell in your clothes, hair, and skin.

So do people who doesn't wash their clothes, hair, skins, etc?

Decreased ability to play sports or do physical activities because of breathing problems.
Can be true.

Earlier than normal wrinkling of the skin, usually the face.

The face? That depends how they smoke the cigarette, if a smoker inhale the cigarette with their mouth squeeze then it will cause wrinkles, but if the smoker doesn't then it's more less wrinkles.

Higher risk of bone fractures, such as hip, wrist, or spine.

How?

Higher risk of starting a fire. This may happen if you fall asleep with a lit cigarette.

Well that was often happened when a smoker was drunk, and smoking same time in the bed. What exactly happen is when a smoker laying on the bed with alcohol, he/she might spill it on the bed and fell asleep, dropped the cigarette on the alcohol, poof! Fire. So blame the alcohol. The cigarette doesn't make so much fire when it was dropped on the cloth, but a black circle hole on the cloth.

Men may have problems having an erection.

I am a 6 years (will be 7 years this September) smoker and still have ercets many times..

Sleeping problems.

Yupp true..

Smoking is an expensive (costly) habit. You will save money if you choose to stop smoking.

That depends where and/or kinds you buy. Also that is not the good reason to not smoke, JMO.

Sore throat.

Staining of teeth.

True..

Women and smoking: You may have a higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke if you smoke and use birth control pills. This risk is more serious if you are 35 years or older. The risk of losing your unborn baby or having a stillborn baby is higher if you are pregnant and smoke. Babies born to smoking mothers often weigh less, and are at a higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). You may have a harder time getting pregnant if you are a smoker. Women who smoke may have a higher risk of osteoporosis (also known as "brittle bones"). Women who smoke also have a higher risk of incontinence, which is when you are unable to control when you urinate.

Well that's for female smokers, not me..

Also, fyi, when I was elementary school, we do learn about the tobacco and alcohol, then middle school, I took the health class, then high school, I took the health class, also I was forced to go to the drugs/alcohol club because of my trouble, but I guess I would keep that in my personal for now, so of course I do know many things about the cigarettes, plus I do know many big lies about the cigarettes also.

Puyo, Smoking can cause a brain cancer in some patients, my grandpa got lung and brain cancer after smoking for many years, it was start when he was 12 years old and it was back in 1930's or 1940's but passed away in 1995. That's what my parent was explain about it.

I don't think it was common, just rare but gain more risk for other organ cancers than lung alone seems right to me because of chemical, it's still passing in around of bodies.

Something new to me.. Does your grandpa smoke at his 12th age (and under that)? The reason why I asked because I know the fact, when young person was starting smoking, he/she have more risk than older person starting smoking.

A cancer that starts in the lung can metastisize and show up in other parts of the body. But that can be said of a cancer that appears in any part of the body. For instance, you can be a non-smoker, get stomach cancer, and, if a particularly aggressive form of cancer, or if untreated for a period of timne, it will metastisize, and travel to other parts of the body.

But then, being obese can cause problems with breathing, as well. It can be resposnible for the development of diabetes. It can precipitate joint problems. It can cause high blood pressure and stroke. It is responsibile for many forms of heart disease. It can and does, cause early death.

Eating too much salt is responsibile for numerous health problems in susceptible individuals. Not brushing your teeth is responsible for health problems. Eating too much red meat is responsible for health problems. Not eating enough is responsible for health problems. We can't ask that the government regulate overy aspect of individual's lives.

As a taxpayer-

I'm riled up and rankled everytime health insurance costs goes up! Most of the factors is from people who did not take care of themselves to start with.
Obsese are the leading cause of many health problems.

I see my money going down the drain to support those obsese people who didn't bother to excerise, who didn't bother to eat the fruits/veggies on the plate, who didn't bother to just take the stairs instead of the elevator, who didn't bother just to watch what they ate and so on. The freaking sad thing- it all could have been prevented!

Those with health issues is fine with me, they can't help it but I'm talking about the next door neighbor that has ordered pizza delivery every other night, Chinese take outs, resturant deliverys and I've never seen them mow that damned eyesore lawn until the village tells them to get it freaking cut due to mostiquitos breeding ground/heaven there... I then see one of those blobs panting/sweating to move their bodies 12 rows... 20 feet across each time... only 240 feet, thats far less than what most of us do in a day in and out! this is really what gets to me... they live on the dole and get fat off the money not even doing anything about their healths making us pay MORE in medicare taxes and so on! Smoking is now a thing of the past for the riled up taxpayer to gripe and complain about now its' the fat that we can gripe and complain about- what's next?

Those type of lazy people are some of the reason why big brother is starting to get control of our lives

I think the true true true source of why americans are being more and more obsese is that we just have become plain 'ol lazy to do anything and we'll pay other people for the services we ourselves are fully capable of doing...

Note to the dog walker: Please refrain from sticking your fingers in my cookie jar after walking Rover and Fido, The oreos does taste funny. The fruit basket is free for grabs....

Thank you very much.

Sorry, Pryo ,, smoking is an addiction. It like drug hard to quit. you said that
one of my mom's friend who was a smoker, she told my mom that she doesn't want to quit smoking because she was scare of gaining weight, that is famous reason among the female smokers. So really that also excuse not to quit smoking and smoking in first place. I posted that kids smoke because it cool,, that is also excuse for them to do that too. Smoking still do lot of health damange and it don't matter how old you are when you smoke. My grandfather died a year ago from lungs cancer cuz of smoking. But remember we all have little cancer cells in our bodies. Whever you smoke or not. Smoking still risk for both men and women and kids. It also facts that cigarettes does have almost 6,000 chemicals. You can check it out at the CDC (Center diease Control) They have all the facts informations.

lots of friends i know who had quit smoking they gained weights... no way i would quit smoking..... i enjoy smoking while i am still alive.. we all have no appointment of death... no matter if one are on good health.. could get killed next day by car...

Well a person starting or continue smoking the cigarette for addiction just doesn't make any sense.

How would you feel if I say "Expensive", "Bad Health", "Stink", etc etc are all just a excuse that a person doesn't want to smoke, but as "cigarettophobia" disorder? Doesn't that sounds sort of mocking?

Also, I am sorry that your grandpa died from smoking... But my point is that, the addiction is not a personal reason, but a health issue, except for those smokers who doesn't feel like they are addicted even though they was.

I have to admit, of course, I am addicted to the cigarette, obsiviously, but that is the reason why I pick a cigarette out of my little box pack right there in my pocket on my pants and lit the cigarette on my mouth? Of course not... I smoke because I enjoy it, as convience.

lots of friends i know who had quit smoking they gained weights... no way i would quit smoking..... i enjoy smoking while i am still alive.. we all have no appointment of death... no matter if one are on good health.. could get killed next day by car...

Well, my hubby quitted smoking last April 2004 but he doesn't gain his weight. I know he is not alone but others doesn't gain their weight either. All what they do is execrise to get their mind off...

You can't compare quitted smoking or smoking bans with car accidents because they both are total different. Smoking habit belongs health and hit by car, train, etc belongs accident.

I don't said like that about cause cancer on other parts than lung but I was said about increase more risk to get cancer on other parts than lung, I know it was uncommon for smokers but my grandpa got brain cancer after lung cancer was occurred but this quote from Puyo's post are right to me about increase more risk but don't means all smokers will get one.

For non-smokers, they get stomach, pelvis, brain or breat cancer then it wasn't their fault because cancer can cause on anytime, when it's happens but smokers who get lung cancer then it's their fault because they chose to smoke it because smoking is responsible for cause an lung cancer, that same warning was labelled and better to think about twice before start become smoker, unless if you are least concern about lung cancer then that's fine with you for smoking.

Smoking bans are major reason due secondhand smoking and health concern but obesity would be so in near future, such as fat tax or growing more food restriction.

Fat taxes? I wonder what kind is that future would be?
personally, my opinion, that would be scary...

Oh please... Why people have to complain, even though everyone is taking the unheathly stuff... *sigh*...

Why does European Union has less obesity rate than in USA?

Well, I never been in Europe, but I have been in Japan, which have the less obesity rate compare to USA, it's because the health foods and beverage are far popular there. It's like you look at the beverage vending machine, there's only Coke, Pepsi, Diet Coke, and Diet Pepsi that wasn't health, but BUNCHES bottles of juices, waters, teas, many health beverages. The fast food are not really popular in Japan, even though it was still familiar to many of its population, while most of people prefer go out and eat healthy foods restraurants there. It's just that their culture, they love sea foods as hell so they stayed healthy.

Also I still remember I had a friend who come from Russia, I thought why not bring him to McDonald just to hang out, when I asked him if he want McDonalds or Taco Bell or anything like that, he stare at me nervously and told me, "I never eat at fast foods, I just eat at home or the resturants..." I didn't expect that he never touch the fast food, I was so shocked when he told me that, I asked him why not give it a try! So he did and he liked it.

I guess I was one of bad American influencer :giggle:

lol, some fast food offers healthly food as well.

I think that fast food in other countries are healthly than USA does at some same chains, such as McDonald's, KFC or so due strictly government regulation on health concern, such as one of my friend told that food at McDonald's are taste better in UK than USA does.

Fat taxes? I wonder what kind is that future would be?
personally, my opinion, that would be scary...

Actually taxes have gone higher on smoking ciggy and tabbaco. I think it probaby better to make it cost more so kids can't get it. I can understands the parents don't want their kids smoking and tyring to prevent that. It not easy thing to do.

actually this have nothing to do with goverment with kids, I am speaking that it better to have the cost of cigarettes go higher so kids can't buy them. Also maybe it help people spend less money on cigarettes. But like I said before, cigarettes is an additions like a drug if you can't quit.

Smokers are the highest taxed consumers in America. The government makes plenty of money off smokers. And they continue to offer subsidies to tobacco farmers.
