Smart cars coming to U.S.
DaimlerChrysler expected to announce plans Tuesday to bring fuel-efficient sub-compact to U.S. market.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- DaimlerChrysler is set to bring the fuel-efficient subcompact Smart car brand to the United States in 2007, according to a published report.

The Detroit News, citing a source familiar with company plans, reported the decision will be announced Tuesday. But a spokeswoman for the Smart brand declined to comment on the report.

"We have not made any decision on a U.S. launch," said Bettina Singhartinger. "You can expect something this week. Until then we do not comment on speculation."

DaimlerChrysler has never made money on the Smart brand, which has been sold in Europe since 1998. The brand is part of DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz unit.

The two-seater egg-shaped cars get 46.3 miles per gallon in the city to 70.6 mpg on the highway, according to some estimates, although Singhartinger points out that if the brand is brought to the United States, it will be the next generation of the vehicle which is due to be rolled out in Europe in early 2007.

With U.S. gasoline prices near $3 a gallon, and lagging sales of the large SUV's and pickups that DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler unit depends upon, it would appear to be the right time to bring Smart cars to the U.S. market.

Why Cant GM,Saturn or FORD make this kind of cars? Expect the Japanese Auto guys make something better than this soon.

Ahem! Do you have any idea what "sub-compact" car is like? It is like that Steve Urkel's (Family matters) car! 2 seater with only one door that opens in the front instead of sides. I do not think it is wise to drive that kind of car on the highways! Even though they saves gas, but they don't have much power to run at higher speed. That car is pretty much fits for laughingstocks! I rather going on Goldwing and still be able to maintain high power even though crusing on the highway.

And Motorcycles arent safe on the highways nether. You saw what happend to steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger.

We need better mileage on cars. 35 MPG doesnt cut it anymore when youre paying $40-$60 for a fill up. This is why im voting for the Democratic party STRAGHT DOWN THE LINE. Besides BUSH ISNT GOING AFTER EXXON & MOBIL CEOs LIKE HE DID TO ENRON.PLUS CONGRESS ISNT DOING SHIT ABOUT IT!!!.
Gas Prices have Skyrocketing ever since bush took office.By Voting for Democrats would put a restrain on the president by taking the powers away from him. What can they do? SUSPEND GAS TAXES FOR 6 MONTHS!!.So Im waiting for our congressmen to do something about that pathectic $3 a gallon shit OR Im Voting Democrats stright down the line this november.

Please do not stereotyping the motorcycles, I know about Ben and it was disappointment for me because I am damn diehard steeler fan, and Steeler native as well. That bike Ben rode is top speed, and fastest bike in the world. I hate these crotch rockets! Most motorcycle accidents you see, mostly are crotch rockets! You can zoom from zero to 150mph in 3 seconds!!! That is where mistakes and accidents happens! You go way way way too fast in no time, thus no time to react! My goldwing can't zoom that fast, thus reducing chance of getting into accident. My goldwing top speed is 191 MPH, but can't get there easily comparing to Crotch rocket where they can reach 200 MPH in less than 5 seconds.

That sub-compact car, has almost similiar risk as motorcycles, you can get killed in sub-compact vehicle even when hit by sedan! Almost no difference between motorcycle and sub-compact vehicles.

BTW, Even though I love the speed, that is why I stay away from crotch rockets. I knew if I had them I probably will go faster than I should and end up regretting. No thanks!

I have No Intrest in Speeding.I just dont wanna keep giving my money to the rich greedy Oil excutive CEOs.Gas Should cost around $1.70 per gallon. Not over $3 a gallon and the goverment isnt prosecuting Exxon & Mobil Oil excutive CEOs on price gouging.

We Americans don't have much choice. What would happens if these oil executives decided to pack and move out the country... Can it happen? SUre! that is because they got deep pocket and got nothing to lose. Think about this, if government decides to jump in, these oil executives will get the last laugh and will ultimate hurt everybody of us. I remember the history of oil crisis back in 1970's and Richard Nixon did jump into the oil companies and this hurts us in long run. That is why government learns lesson and not do it again. We can't afford see another Hyperinflation like back in early 70's.

It was one of the weirdest cars I ever seen.

Look at ENRON people.Theyre going away for a long time and theyre gonna do HARDTIME in a cell.Prison is not a place you wanna go,Its sheer hell! You gotta watch your back at all times and you dont know whos really your friend or foe inside prison.I suggest you watch the reruns of "Prisoner cell block H" and know what being in prison life is all about.I want the these oil executives being in the same place where those ENRON people are in.And FYI once you get arrested by the police you cant leave the country cause you wont be issued a passport to leave this country.

Enron is different, they don't have much impact on whole country. THey are just pure energy producer. They don't supply the potential energy. Enron have to buy potential energy somewhere. The oil companies are the potential energy provider! Just think about it, these oil companies can SHUT DOWN the oil refinery and pack and move out. This would have HUGE impact on the whole country FAR FAR greater than Enron! We all depend on oil for EVERYTHING, and once the oil supply cuts off, we are in for big TROUBLE!

But Get New people to run the oil industry. And Put NEW RULES AND GUIDELINES . Like if you want to raise prices it must go though the energy dept.Like you must attend a hearing in order the energy dept comission to approve it.Just like how the Post Office goes though if they want to raise the price of stamps. Just like how the insurance company goes though if they want to raise the rates.Just like how the Cab Company goes though if they want to raise the price rates on the meters.Just like how the Electric Company goes though if they want to raise the electric rates. And Just like how the Telephone company goes though if they want to raise Your phone rates.

It won't be that easy, stock holders is involved, and you can't just dump them and start everything else. Just think about this, even one month of oil cut off can Jeopardize American's economy and lead to hyperinflation. The consequences are far too great.

Well Clerks are now at risk selling gas to you.People are now robbing gas stations and assulting store clerks.People are angry and they want the government to take action or they can begin collecting unemployment after november elections.

Sure, but think about this, once oil supply cuts off, how would people go to work, how would this poor clerk sell gas when there is no gas, and that manufacturers needs oil related products to make products, how would they be able to stay in business? There will be disruption on economy because economy depends on oil to keep it reeling, once oil cuts off, the economy would stall BIG time and hurt everybody.

Thats why we need Cars with Higher MPG! If auto companies would improve High MPG then we can still move things but less trips to the gas stations.See when prices are high what you do? YOU DONT BUY RIGHT? Well With Gas we have No Choice Thats communism!!!

Just FYI...The Dems are clueless too. They (THE DEMS) want to hike the gas tax big time. That isn't such a bad idea as Europe does that now and explains $5-6 plus a gallon of gas. But unlike Europe, we don't have alternative transportation options (NYC is one exception as some other big cities but the rest don't) to use if that happens. The economy goes down the tank and our jobs at that. Hence, I reiterated that Dems are clueless about a rational energy plan. Nobody really knows how to go about doing this without hissy fits from this party or that party. It is going to take everybody involvement to get something rational going with energy. The private sector is actually doing something about it but it will take a little while before the fruits of their efforts show.

If anybody should get the blame, it should be all of us for avoiding what should have been done during the 90's (better yet since the 70's when we saw the handwriting on the wall)...get serious about alternatives in energy and transportation. Now, we have the Chicken Littles crying about the sky is falling...

BTW - Diehardbiker has been giving it to you straight! He is quite accurate in his assessments on your objections and thoughts...

The Smart Car coming to the USA?

woooo I wonder if they will bring in the Roadster? Some European tuners have been hotrodding the Smart cars to get more power out of them. One of the tuners even stuffed in a motor straight off a Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle!

and oh BTW...Steve Urkel will be more than happy to trade that 1959 BMW Isetta (the one with door that opens in front) for the Smart car.

That little car went to 60 in 4.9 secs with a hot rod motor and stuff. Pretty quick little machine. I think it's too small for me because I can't stuff in big items in that little thing. ;)
