Six degrees of separation is the theory that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. The theory was first proposed in 1929 by the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy in a short story called Chains.

I am sure many of you know the phrase based on the "Six Degrees to Kevin Bacon"... they even got a game for him.
Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon:
The Game
Armed with that list, we invite you to play our version of the Kevin Bacon game with a distinctly Louisville twist. We're going to give you a half-dozen names to chain to Bacon, all of them with at least one ATL star alum as a possible link, sometimes more. (Bacon himself doesn't count, since he's a given.) Each time you use one of the ATL alums in a chain, you receive five points.
In addition, we invite you to come up with your own chains with any actor/actress you want -- including ATL alums -- at the end and Bacon at the start. You must make the chain between them and Bacon in six or fewer links. For each ATL alum you are able to use in your chain, you again collect five points. Also, in keeping with the original ground rules of the Kevin Bacon game, you can link through television shows, but the performer has to be a regular and not a guest or cameo. And while cameos in theatrical-release movies count, those in made-for-TV movies don't. It has to be a real part, not just a few seconds on-screen. You can also link through an ATL production.

Why should you want to go to all this trouble -- besides the fact that once you start, this Kevin Bacon thing proves downright addictive? Well, the folks at ATL have offered a prize you simply can't refuse: a 1997-'98 Actors' season subscription for two. We'll award it to the person who scores the most points.

So sharpen your wits and pencils and E-Mail your lists to us time-stamped by April 15 (since this is such a taxing contest). We'll announce the winner in our July "Best of Louisville" issue. In the case of a tie, we'll think of something. Louisville magazine staff members and their immediate families as well as ATL employees and cast members are, of course, not eligible for the prize, but are welcome to play for the fun of it.

When you write your chains, you must tell us the film or TV show the link is made through. As an example, here's how we connect Kevin Bacon to the Alien in Alien:

Kevin Bacon was in Footloose with Dianne Weist,
who was in The Birdcage with Gene Hackman,
who was in The Firm with Holly Hunter,
who was in Copycat with Sigourney Weaver,
who was in Alien with the Alien.
That's five links. You would have earned 10 ATL points for that sequence if we hadn't thought of it first.

Now it's your turn:
FIRST LINKS:
Connect Kevin Bacon to the following stars using at least one Actors Theatre alum in the chain:
1) Wilford Brimley
2) Audrey Hepburn
3) "Marky" Mark Wahlberg

SECOND HELPING:

Link Kevin Bacon to these ATL alums (Yep, you get five points for each alum we've named):
1) Pamela Reed
2) John Turturro
3) Timothy Busfield

PIG OUT:

Create your own chains to any star you want using as many ATL alums as possible, but at least one in any chain. Remember, chains can be as short as one (a direct link), but may not have more than six links. You get five points for each ATL alum you list. You may not use the same alum more than once in any single chain, but you may use them as many times as you like in different chains.

Anyway, the point of this thread is to name your six-degrees-of-separation to famous people. The rules: (1)you must be connected to that person in less than six degrees and (2) more than one degree!

How do you count a degree? A degree is the LINK you have between YOURSELf to a person... then if that person knows somebody else, that counts as a LINK which brings you to the total of TWO.

START OFF!

My Six-Degrees to Famous people

I know Pablo Picasso by three degrees.

One of his famous mistress, Françoise Gilot, (the main character in the movie "Surviving Picasso") was married to Jonas Salk who founded the Salk Institution at a local university. One of my friends works at the Salk Institue and knows her personally because she frequently visits the institution to the day.

Amazing, isn't it! I am sure I got more six-degrees-of-separation to famous people but Picasso is the closest I can get to! ;-)

I think everybody who is in Deaf world knows everybody in that world by six degrees. There should be a book about the Deaf culture and the impact of six degrees. You are bound to meet them again in the future because they have some friend that you know, or they are friends with a friend of yours, et cetera!

I know Kevin Costner by 6 degrees (by relations of brothers)

Nancy is related to Mollie Costner Stacy
Mollie is related to David Jefferson Costner (her father)
David is related to David Heywood Costner (his father)
David is related to Michael Costner
Michael had two relatives, Peter and Jacob (one of them is his dad)
Peter is Kevin Costner's ancestor, and Jacob is my ancester

;)

My aunt knew Mother Theresa personally, so that puts me one degree of seperation away from a soon-to-be saint, and two degrees of seperation away from half the population of Greater Calcutta.

My mother knows Vidal Sassoon, Kris Kristofferson, and Mariette Hartley, which I'm sure would link me to Kevin Bacon somehow. (but I’m not gonna spend all day Googling it up trying to figure out how).

Mayflower has met celebrities up the wazoo due to her employment in a major medical facility here in Los Angeles, so she’s undoubtedly only one DOS away from Mr. Bacon.

I doubt I'm doing this right, but it would be 2 degrees of separation.

My stepdad is Al Gore's 4th cousin.

:dunno:

Sorry, I'm not quite sure how I would format that to the game.

I have met several famous people through my friend in New York City. It's really interesting. I have met Harvey Firnstein (the guy who did make up on Robin Williams on Ms Doubtfire.) So I guess I "know" Robin Williams through 4th degree (me - my friend - Harvey Firnstein - Robin Williams)

All I know is that Harvey Firnstein used to have a deaf lover.

I have a friend who met both of the Clintons, putting me two degrees away from them. So that means I'm 3 degrees away from a lot of famous people from all over the world, including Albright, Arafat, Blair, both Bushes, Carter, Dole, Ford, Frist, Gingrich, Gore, Rabin, Reagan, Yeltsin and Zemin.
I think I'm also about 3 degrees away from Stephen Hawking.

I found that since Albright met Kim Jong il, I'm 4 degrees away from him, someone that the big W put into the Axis of Evil. :-o :eek2:
I also found another 3 degree connection between me and Bush. My friend knows someone who talked with him.

Well I have a bunch of Six Degree of Seperation things......
Geena Davis: my friend's aunt went to high school with her...also her parents live next door to my old audilogist who is also a family friend.

Shawn Colvin: my friend has opened for her
Indigo Girls: played with Shawn Colvin at Lillth Fair.
Gerhaldo: used to live in my town. One of my friend's dads was best friends with Gerhaldo. Also my friend Tom was his nephew.
