Hi. Last year I've purchased an X10 ActiveHome Pro for controlling my lamp, bed vibrator, and fan, and couple months later, my CM15A (an interface module, a central unit for turning on/off lights and appliances) doesn't work and I don't want to spend another $50 to get another computer interface module. I don't know why it didn't work and Windows doesn't recognize my computer interface module. Another disadvantage of X-10 is the number of seconds it takes to turn on/off/dim the lights. For example, if I press the dim button for my lamp, it will take a half a second to dim a light. My last disadvantage is with the stick-in wall switch: Stick the wall switch to the painted wall, try to take out the wall switch, and paint will be teared off from the wall. This is the one I'm talking about. Of course I can buy specially-made tape for the paint, but I think X-10's quality testing needed improvement: test the stick-in wall switch against the paint before releasing the wall switch to the public. That way the damage cost can be kept to the minimum for all those who live in an apartment with paint in the wall.

I'd like an instant-on, instant-off, instant-dimmer approach to X-10's Home Automation System. Thus I would go with Simply Automated's UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) technology. You can visit Simply Automated's website here.

I'm looking for a home automation starter kit other than X-10. There's Z-Wave but that's only if your computer's on 24/7, so it looks to me that UPB seems to be my only option.

Oh...I found what I'm looking for...Took me a whole lot of researching...

However I may not be able to replace wall switches in an apartment for controlling lights and appliances...

But for those who own a home, did you buy the kit for automating your home? If so, what is your experience of controlling your lights and appliances with the modules and switches?
