Deaf Santa Making Special Appearance Dec. 1 at SilentCall Christmas Party/Reunion

Children who are deaf or deaf/blind from throughout Southeast Michigan will meet a deaf Santa Dec. 1 who will greet them with and respond to their wish list with a hearty, “Ho, Ho, Ho” in sign language.

This very special Santa will be greeting deaf children from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, December 1, at SilentCall Communications, 5095 Williams Lake Road in Waterford.

The event was organized a half-dozen years ago by George Elwell, President of SilentCall, who was motivated to start his business when he was trying to meet the needs of his brother-in-law who became permanently deaf at age two because of meningitis.

“One day I asked him how he would know if there was a fire in the house and he answered, ‘when I smell the smoke’,” explained Elwell. “That motivated me to create products that will produce flashing strobe lights and vibrations to alert deaf individuals to fire or smoke, a door bell or phone ringing and more. That was the beginning of SilentCall in 1987.”

After the business was up and running, Elwell held his first Christmas Party for children who are deaf or deaf/blind. Ron Schultz, an engineer with General Motors, volunteered as his deaf Santa. Elwell has invited the alumni of previous parties to this year’s event.

Children coming to the party will be treated to sandwiches, candy and other treats in addition to the special visit with Santa. Refreshments will be served. Children and family members will be taken on a tour of SilentCall facilities. Many of the children attend through Deaf Community Advocacy Network (DEAF C.A.N.!) in Sylvan Lake, Michigan. (Deaf C.A.N.)

The party this year is being held in conjunction with the 20th anniversary year-long celebration of SilentCall’s two decades of producing products that keep people who are deaf safe and secure in their homes and workplace. Some devices even warn the deaf resident when someone is trying to gain access to their home.

All of SilentCall’s products carry a five year warranty and are of such high quality that the failure rate is an amazing .01%. The photo cell smoke detectors are powered by a lithium battery that will last up to 10 years. The system’s transmitter will send signals up to 100 feet. Then with the introduction of SilentCall’s new Signature Series in 2008, that range will increase to upwards of 300 feet.

Any person who is deaf, hard of hearing or deaf/blind, a family member of a deaf/blind child or those who work with deaf/blind individuals may call 248-673-7353 (voice/tty) for information about the Dec. 1 party. Space is limited so call early.

SilentCall is located in the Schram Tech Park on the south side of Williams Lake Road just west of Dixie Highway in Waterford Michigan.
